the great ocean road
still great even when cloudy (PART 2) arrived in melbourne early on tuesday morning to find it COLD!!!!! i most definatly was not prepared for that!! although after all the fires in victoria and the record breaking heat wave i think the cold was a welcome relief. oh, and when i say it was cold i mean 18c, sorry to all of you who are still stuck in snow!! so i was in melbourne completly exhausted from the flight, cold and couldnt check in to our room for another 6hours, so jodie and i went top book some day trips. spent the day attempting to look like a human but not really achieving it. i think my mad 4 weeks in asia had caught up with me!! i must admit im not convinced by melbourne, i know its areally nice city but i just couldnt see it (again propably because i could hardly see from the sleepyness!) and i really feel like i could have been in leeds city centre. it didnt help where our hostel was situated, maybe if it was out in the st kilda beach area it might have been a bit different but never mind.
wednesday was spent on a day trip
kooala!!
chilling out in his tree down the great ocean road. this was a really nice day and if i had had more time it would have been fab to hire a camper van and drive myself down there, stopping at all the nice surf beaches. the views were amazing, and im sure would have been even more spectacular if it hadnt been cloudy, blowing a gale and trying to rain!! i also fell in love on this trip......with the kooala bear!! they might be the cutest animal ever!! it was ace to see them in the wild and i was really lucky to see them awake munching on the euycalyptus trees, as they normally sleep for up to 20 hours a day!!
the trip also stopped at a cool temperate rainforest to look at some big old trees and a beach which would have been lovely had it not been so windy!!
we finally reached the 12 apostles which really were spectacular and due to the clould got some crazy photos instead of nice sunny ones, but hey its good to be different!!
after a short sleep i was up to go into town (more about that later) before heading off on to the penguin
parade tour to see the little blue penguins come in from the sea at night. on the way we stopped at a wild life sanctuary (not a zoo!) to see some rescued animals and i got to play with and feed the kangaroos!! roos are ace!!! it never stops being funny as they bounce around and some are so naughty!! one of them knew i had food so kept looking as if he was going to give me a kiss! bless, the closest thing i will get to a kiss this valentines day!! ha!
i also met some emus who look like thwey are alsways smiling at you, the wombats but they were asleep, some more koolas and some wallabies!
next wasd a stop to the nobbies. a seal colony and also where some of the blue penguins live! even managed to see 2 brave penguins who had come to land in the daylight (they normally wait until its dark so predatiors cant see them). they are also incedidbly cute! so the last stop was rthe penguin parade itself where you sit on a platform and wait for tyhe sun to go down and the penguins come out to play!
at first 2 penguins came out of the sea to check it was safe and then they bring a whole group out of the water and they waddle up the beach to go find there homes. it was fab to watch and i especially liked a big fat one who had eaten too much out at sea and couldnt walk properly! he kept falling over! i followed hinm though and after a struggle up the hill he found his way home. there was also a chick hiding under the walk way waiting for its mum and everytime a group of penguins came up the beach he came flying out and crying as they walked past! quite sad to watch really! it was along night but worth it!
now back to why i went into town yesterday. i have made a last minite decision to go into the outback. so instead of going into sydney, i found myself on a flight to alice springs this morning and tomorrow i start a nine day trek into the out back to see ayers rock and to make my way up to darwin. so im now on my own having to be very brave!!
haha! but i have already met some nice girls who will hopefully be with me for part of the trip so i should be ok! i thinki have made the right decision and i cant wait to be out in the country again! just being in singapore and melbourne made me want to get out of the city and to see real australia.

So jealous of your little blue penguin pics. Have seen a few of them but not this close and never able to get a piccy. Sounds like you are having a ball though xx
