Well, what can i say, it's like i'm on a totally different continent here in Melbourne! Since i arrived last Monday the weather has been reminiscent of Spring time England - really strange! In the morning it may be cloudy, then by midday raining and in the evening all blue skies and sunshine - obviously this has meant that on more than one occaision i've been caught out, either by carrying brolly and jacket in the boiling sun, or by getting soaked in a short skirt and little top = i just can't win!!!!
But enough with the moaning about the weather - what is it with us Brits and weather talk - we all do it ALL the time! I've been having a pretty good time here, though i've not really been here long enough to completely settle in, like in Sydney. That doesn't mean that i haven't seen a good chunk of the city though, and i've been jetting around on a couple of tours - busy, busy, busy!!!
On my second day, i met up with some guys who were at my Hostel in Sydney, and since then i haven't been able to get rid of
them...only kidding, it's been cool to hang around with familiar faces - helped the transition to a brand new city!! We spent that day doing a Ramsey Street and city tour, which was good fun. We got to see some of the locations used in Neighbours, got to visit Ramsey Street and stand outside the houses used - though we couldn't go in as people actually LIVE in them - was a little bit gutted about that! Especially as the studio where Neighbours is recorded is shut off to the public, so i couldn't see any sets either! I made up for this however, by visiting the Melbourne Museum, which has the Robinson's Kitchen on display...including Scott and Charlene's WEDDING CAKE...i was snapping away with the camera like a mad woman!
The next day I decided to do some city sightseeing - popping into The National Gallery, looking around Federation Square and generally mooching about. In the evening i went, with the guys, to the Queen Victoria night market which was HUGE and seemed to sell everything under the sun! It was here that i had my first taste of KANGEROO steak, CROCODILE pieces and EMU sausage - it
just HAD to be done!! Actually, although it sounds bizarre, they were quite good - kangeroo tasted like beef, croc was a bit like chicken and Emu was oh so GOOD - a unique taste of it's own!!! Definitely one to try if you get the chance!
Since then, i've just been doing more sightseeing - the Botanic Gardens, The International Gallery, and i even ventured down to St Kilda to walk along by the beach and eat some AMAZING cake from one of the many cake shops they have down there!!! I also spent one day doing a trip along the Great Ocean Road - we walked along Bells Beach (where the Rip Curl contests are held), visited the quaint sea-side town of Lorne, went on a wicked Rainforest walk, saw WILD KOALAS at Otway National Park (where i also fed a wild parrot!) and sat with tea and biccies watching the sun go down over the Twelve Apostles - a breathtaking experience!
To top off my stay in Melbourne, i went to the Australian Open yesterday with one of the guys. We made a whole day of it - getting up early to get seats in
a good arena (we only had basic ground passes) and making a picnic to take = all good fun! We actually managed to get some BRILLIANT seats right at the front - the players were literally so close that i could wink at them and they'd see me do it!! We were SO LUCKY, because we were able to see Mary Pierce, Thomas Haas, ANDY MURRAY (although he lost 😞 !) and Kim Clijisters play, and all for the equivalent of 11 pounds!!!! I especially thought it was a wicked day, as i've never seen Tennis live before and the atmosphere, particularly at Murray's match, was electric!! I'll absoultely HAVE to do Wimbledon now - no excuse!
My time here though has come to an end, and tonight i board another FANTASTIC night coach to Adelaide - oh joy! I have quite a packed schedule ahead of me...but i'll try my best to update as often as poss...oh to be a backpacker......
