Prior to landing at Melbourne, we had booked 3 weeks accommodation at a place called Rosebud which we now know is a small village located on the Mornington Peninsula approx 75KM from Melbourne itself. We were a little apprehensive as we had booked it using Gumtree of all sites, however decided to take the risk as we were becoming a little tired of moving from place to place every couple of days or so, we just wanted something we could call home for a short while. We arranged to meet the owner Tina at a pre arranged designation as she had kindly offered to take us to the house for no additional cost. Heading off for our rendezvous with full military backpacks in a sweltering 30+ degree heat, Tina had forgot to mention that it was around a 3-4km walk from the bus depot where we had been dropped off, but to our credit we managed to accomplish the task without cramping or heart surgery, something we wouldn’t have been able to do 3 months ago. Not having a car 24/7 was beginning to pay rewards. Our apprehension was very soon overcome as we drove along the Peninsula heading towards our
Melbourne City
Lunch by the river abode, the road and the sea run parallel for approx 40km and the views are like something out of a holiday brochure, we absolutely loved it from the moment we arrived to departing. Although the house (large shed - made of wood over here) could have done with a bloody good clean, it had everything we needed and the location was superb. It was only a short walk from our house to the beach and the sea water here is so clear, turquoise, calm and cooling, as you can imagine a lot of our days were spent there. On our first day here we saw some locals bring in a baby gummy shark they had just caught. We have taken up snorkelling and the array of marine life we have seen is just breathtaking, even spotting a seahorse at one point. Its also sad to say that I have bought a fishing rod with full compliment of tackle and have enjoyed a few hours dipping my rod and bits into the water. While all the locals were bringing in decent enough sized fish to go on the table that night, what did I get on my very first cast? -
Hot Springs
Spot the lobster, who's brownest, answers on a postcard to... a star fish, not on the hook but on the heavy thing that makes it sink, how good am I (Trigger we are on for a day trip sea fishing when I get back). Still no real catches as yet but the gossip you hear from the locals more than makes up for it. On the days we managed to drag ourselves away from the beach, we hired a car and headed of for some breath taking drives, taking in one of the many vineyards or landscaped gardens as we drove. About 5kms from where we were staying was a place called Arthur’s Seat, it’s right at the top of the Peninsula and the views from there overlooking the bay are fantastic. There is a chairlift that takes you there normally but unfortunately it wasn’t working the day we went. We also spent a day visiting the Peninsula Hot Springs which had numerous outside bathing pools which were heated to varying degrees, and all promising to cure some sort of arthritic problem or another. We are becoming like a pair of old gits out here, just sitting around and taking in the views, although Karen drew the line when I
Vineyard
One of the many vineyards on the Peninsula, netting to protect from pests wanted to play bowls, spoilsport.
We did also spend a couple of days in Melbourne, it’s a nice enough city, lots of shops, bars and restaurants as you’d expect with most cities. We enjoyed a nice lunch by the riverside, however 2 days was enough for us after all the cities we had seen recently. For all you neighbours fans out there (are there actually any?) we were told that Ramsey Street was not far from Melbourne City so decided to pay it a visit on the way home - how sad are we... Trust it to be bin day when we arrived, to be honest its no different to any of the streets surrounding it although I’m sure it looks different when they are filming.
Most of the evenings were spent either relaxing with a bottle of wine and cooking our own meals again (which believe it or not is nice after eating out for 3 consecutive months) or at the local Library where we were able to grab a little free internet (over 8 bucks an hour over here using café’s), and we also went to see a couple of the latest movies. My personal favourite
Arthurs Seat (Karens Seat)
Last seen in Albert Square nightspot however was the local Hotel which trebles up as a restaurant, pub and betting shop - how sweet can life be. They don’t seem to have many pubs over here but they more than make up for it with the numerous drive in liquor stores which do more business than McDonalds and KFC put together. I hope some of the pictures we post showing the Peninsular do it justice, it really is a lovely place with fantastic views. We were more than happy to have spent a few weeks here before leaving for the next part of our journey in a campervan…
