My weekend started on Friday (as most tend to do). I went down to St. Kilda to a place called the Espy to see some Australian music. This venue was pretty sweet. It reminded me a lot like the Phoenix Hill Tavern in Louisville, KY. It had 3 or 4 stages with live bands on each one. A few mates I met through church invited me to go out so naturally I did. Turns out they were friends with the band that was playing. So I got to talk to a few of the members before they took the stage. All 3 bands I saw were really good, all three were alt-countryish and interested in the Nashville music scene.
Everyone I was with are originally from Sydney (including the band members) so we talked about things to do and see when I go down there in a couple weeks. One guy who just moved to Melbourne a week and a half ago called his parents and told me I could stay at his house even though he won't be there. I'm not sure if I'll take him up on his offer but I thought it was very generous and spoke
a lot towards the character of Australians.
On Saturday I had to get my act together and actually book these trips I'd been talking about, so I got the New Zealand trip booked and paid for, and a trip out to the Grampian Mountains next weekend. These are on the western side of Melbourne and should be a fun trip. I ran into a small hurdle on changing my Sydney flight and will have to go to the american airlines office sometime this week to sort it out.
Blake also figured a way to talk through ichat so it was basically tv phone through the computer. Way cool and all the more reason Macs are better than PCs and Steve Jobs will soon reclaim the kingdom of Silicon Valley.
On Sunday, I talked to the whole family on the computer including Georgia the latest edition to our happy home. I also listened to the UK football game on the internet. Being on about a 10 minute delay I told my family not to tell me what was going on as I wanted to listen to it myself. However, somebody else texted me the outcome so I couldn't
The Tea House
I worked here one time really enjoy it as the final score was announced. Nonetheless I am super excited as we have beaten a No.1 team for the first time in 40 something years. After the GeeLong Cats won their title I'm convinced anything is possible and I just want to be around when we defeat UT later this year!
I then went back down to St. Kilda to meet some mates for a bike ride to Brighton Beach. I went with that guy that had the birthday, his fiancé, and those 2 lawyer girls I met. It was great fun and I was just so excited to get on a bike. We ate brunch on the beach and talked about the Australian school system. The weather was perfect. Near 70 degrees and crystal clear blue sky. On the return journey it was my turn to lead and I guess I was just being American cause I just took off going pretty fast. There were lots of kids on small bikes and people just walking enjoying the day.
All of the sudden a wild Dingo came running from the water chasing a Kangaroo on the other side of the bike path. I could
see that the Dingo was going to run right over this little girl who was just barely making it on her first bike without training wheels. With killer instincts I flipped my bike 360 degrees and wrestled the Dingo to the ground before he made contact with any pedestrians. The Kangaroo and little girl made it safely out of danger and the Dingo returned back to his burrow. Luckily I escaped with only minor scratches on my hands. I was thanked by the local council and given the key to St. Kilda for my heroic efforts. I humbly excepted this generous notoriety and told the crowd that I was just looking out for the safety of Kangaroos and little girls and would like to think anyone would have done the same thing.
After the parade; I figured whilst I was in St. Kilda, I should go down to see the little penguins again. I began to think that this will probably be the last time I get down here as next weekend is really my last in Melbourne and I'm going out to the mountains so I probably won't make it back. I managed to see a few penguins
on their nests, I said goodbye and made my way back to the apt. I wasn't sad but I think the penguins were...
