Neighbours set. This garage is actually real.
When we'd arrived in Adelaide we'd just missed the fringe festival so it was pretty quiet. Melbourne on the other hand was well into the comedy festival so there was a definate buzz about the place. We decided that we'd try and catch some acts as well as seeing some of the sights of the city. We visited the state library (where I type this now) as we were told of free internet access. This was a blessing and a curse, we stayed there for 4.5 hours the first day and then went back to our hostel seeing nothing of the city. At our hostel we were upgraded to an en-suite room for free. Jurassic Park! The hostel was quite close to the city and we're pretty used to 15 minute walks now. We got tickets for Ardal O'Hanlon & Dan Willis for 2 separate nights. We didn't know who Dan Willis was but his show was based on what Ferris Bueller would do in situations so we went for it.

Ardal O'Hanlen (from Father Ted) was on at the Melbourne town hall. We didn't know what to expect from him in standup but the tickets were cheap (15

GBP). He was actually quite funny and it was still early when we got out so we were tempted to go to another show. We couldn't decided on one and I persuaded Debbie to go to the cinema with me to watch 300. Violent, bloody and good fun. We got back quite late and thankfully there was no noise unlike the previous night when some Aussie girl had been re-enacting a modernised Romeo and Julie's balcony scene with a guy outside a kebab shop with a voice like a fog horn. We saw Dan Willis a few days later in a much smaller venue (actually a "British" pub). It was funny and appealed to people our age but seemed a little bit lost on some of the 19 year olds some of whom I think hadn't even watched the film.

One day we visited the museum where we read about the history of Melbourne and visited a special temporary exhibit about the Great Wall of China which I now know to the walls of China. It's another place we'd like to see but not on this trip. There was also some information on Neighbours (which has been going 22

years) in the museum. This was a bit of a taster for us as Debbie had insisted we were going on a tour well before we left the UK! This was booked for the following day. I've not watched Neighbours for maybe 10 years so I only know a few characters. The tour started with a trip to Erinsborough high. We even had in-bus entertainment as we watched classic episodes of Neighbours including Daphne's death and the Madge/Harold wedding. After some cheesy photos at the school we were took to the studios but were only allowed to see some of the outside sets due to filming. Several photos later we were whisked off to Ramsay Street a.k.a PineOak Court in real life. That's right Neighbours isn't real. The street is actually quite a small cul-de-sac which the studio rents out from the owners a few days a week. They make it bigger through different camera angles and adding numbers onto the existing house numbers. E.g. No 2 becomes No 22 when filming. More cheesy photos and we were off to St Kilda to finish the tour by meeting a star of the show. It was a guy called Patrick who

played a character called Connor. I had no idea who he was but everyone else including Debbie seemed to know so people were happy to get photos and autographs. Instead of getting the bus back to the city centre we stayed in St Kilda to have a look around as it was another place that you should see according to the good book (lonely planet). It's a small beach resort with lots of coffee shops (not Dutch style) and you can also go there to sometimes see penguins around the pier. We saw one swimming around. Having looked around St Kilda we got a tram back to th city centre and made our very own skippy bolognese. It was the third time we'd ate kangaroo since getting to Melbourne but it's good meat and it's cheap.
