My Red Rooster Outfit
Brought back all those Maccy D memories!! On Monday of this week I worked in the Cricket Victoria office again. Outside the Snow Patrol gig, I had passed a girl that I thought I knew her from somewhere, but was too far away to say hi. Turns out it was the receptionist I was covering in the Cricket office and she thought the same about me!! Small world.
Throughout that week I was in the City and getting pretty desperate for work so I came up with the bright idea of joining a hospitality agency. I had previously noticed one on Collins Street so thought I would pop in and see what they had available. It was 5.30pm and there were only 2 guys in the office and the receptionist was gone, so they invited me in and got me to fill out some forms. Once I did that, I was like “so, when I can start”. He was a little taken aback - seems that this was an usual question to ask a guy who is looking for people to work for him?? Hum, he looked at his computer screen. "Can you work tomorrow?" he asks. Yeah! - where and when? ……Can you work at the
Me & Adelaine
Modelling our new outfits AFL Grand Final? Yeah!
So the next day I was working in a bar called Zinc in Federation Square, which is at the heart of the CBD (Central Business District) next to Flinders St station. It was a lunch function for business managers and I was waiting (!). It was a bit mental considering I hadn’t done anything like this before. Of course I told them I could do that and more, so I just followed everyone else and to honest, you didn’t really need to know much! I was dishing out food and drinks. Hardly rocket science!
I was a really dull event and the other staff weren’t a happy lot, other than the bar man, who was having a ball to himself! After my shift I got to sample some of the Chef’s creations - spicy veg cous cous and tiramisu. Yum yum!! Turns out the chefs were from all over the world, including Scotland and Ireland. The Scottish guy was the Head Chef in Stravagin in the West End a couple of years back and is still mates with folk who work there!! Interesting, ah?
Meanwhile, the other agency got me a week’s work
in a…….wait for it……..a company that makes cardboard boxes!!! How dull. So, I started on the Fri and I was in an office with 3 credit controllers and the Manager. It was a strange office because the credit controllers couldn’t get any work done coz the manager annoyed them constantly about accounts, queries, wanting stuff done, asking about old stuff. I mean its cardboard boxes we’re talking about! I was doing some account updating stuff and filing. After a hard week of office duties, I meet Ricky on the Fri with his office colleagues for a few drinks in the city. Turned out to be a late one as we got chatting to a girl from Ricky’s work who lived and worked in Hong Kong for years and she was telling us all about it. Hong Kong - another place on list of places to visit……
Saturday was the AFL Grand Final (Port Adelaide v Geelong) and it’s a very busy, exciting day in Melbourne. Everyone loves footie (Aussie Rules) here and I was quite excited about getting the opportunity to go to the Final as tickets are extremely difficult, if not impossible to get. There are only about
The stadium
Massive place - 100,000 fans! 14 teams in the AFL and 7 of them are from Melbourne. The good thing is that the final teams are completely different every year and it’s never the same team twice in a row who wins it. So, when I arrived I was told to hang about and they would put me with someone who has worked there before so I didn’t get lost. I was paired with Adelaine, a 19 year old who is working to save money to go and live with her boyfriend in Perth. She was really friendly and she took me up to the best seats for the view and to take some snaps. It was played at the MCG and it was a full house (100K), the fans are all dispersed throughout the stadium and it seems that every man and his dog go to the footie. There were children, young people, mums and dads, old folk; it was like a great big family day out. It was a lovely atmosphere with lots of banter between sides. Folk just come along in there cars, park up right outside the stadium on the grass, get the barbie out the boot and let the kids
The gang
Michael, Adelaine (who I invited back for some drinks after work!) and Michelle and Michaels pals run round while the adults get a few stubbies and listen to the game on the radio. I could hardly get that excited about it as I don’t get Aussie Rules yet or support an Aussie team yet!! And it’s not the Old Firm!!
Our shift was in a Red Rooster, which is like KFC, so we headed to the uniform room and got our get up for the day. Man! My top was red!!! So not my colour!! We were on the tills so we just had a laugh and it was only busy for about 2 hours in the whole shift. It was quiet from the start of our shift until the 1st quarter (there is a 15 min break every quarter) - perfect - I nipped into the stadium and watched Jet opening the game. Wow hoo! I was popping in and out of the stadium throughout the game until we finished at 4.30pm. The game finished at 5pm so I managed to convince Adelaine to hang around for a few drinks. We went to the bar and I meet another agency bloke that I was working with in Zinc. He plied us with free drinks
til 7pm and then we headed to ours for a party!! By this time I was slightly pi**ed (he was putting shots in our pints!!) and Ricky and I had Michelle and Michael and their 2 mates coming round.
While I was a the game, Ricky went to pick up our new car!! Woo hoo!!
There is a 24 hour Subway (how good!?) and Michelle and Ebony (Michelle's pal) went for some late night munchies. Michael is in a band and hoping to get lots of gigs in the next few years so he loves music - I think I took him through my entire CD collection!! Turns out that big British bands are still relatively unheard of over here and vice versa. It was well late when we got to bed and there were a few hangovers lurching in the morning!
