Well hello from a dark Melbourne, Australia...yes, it's only shortly after 5 pm here on Saturday! The last few days have been filled with some excitement, some exploring of new territory and a whole lot of laughing and memory making! I woke up yesterday, but got to sleep in because I didn't have class. I hopped on the 11:40 train down to Flinders Street to meet up with Theresa and Hector. There is a Pixar Exhibit that they have here at the Australian Center for the Moving Image which is in Federation Square, so we decided we would meet up and go there for the afternoon. Well, there was no sign of Hector (who we later found out had forgotten but ended up meeting up with us), so Theresa and I went to lunch hoping that ... read more

Well, I thought today was going to be a rather boring day just filled with orientation, but it ended up being the best day yet! Today began with orientation and lots of boring information about enrolment, class requirements, health insurance, visa conditions, etc. Then, after lunch things got better as we had a review of some Australian lingo (quite interesting) which was quickly followed by the best presentation by a faculty member that I will probably ever hear! Dr. Mark Witten (I believe) from the Communications faculty came and talked to us about expectations in the classroom, how the Swinburne class will be formatted, etc. Then, I came to the realization that things are going to be much more RELAXED here on a personal level with professors. He was explaining to us that in most countries, ... read more

Hola! I will keep this one short and sweet because I doubt anyone is really interested in learning about the Victorian State Parliament.....however, I found it fairly interesting. The Australian government is structured similar to the U.S. in many ways, but also very different in other respects. I visited the Victorian State Parliament on Friday, January 12th. The building was immaculate. The rooms are filled with decorations that are lined with 23.5k gold (why not 24k gold…..good question?). Australia’s Chief Executive is the Queen of England (otherwise known as the “Crown”). The Queen has only visited Australia 5 times since 1955. Thus, she has a representative who is called the Governor General. The Governor General is primarily a figurehead (much like the Crown), but is responsible for signing laws into effect on behalf of the Queen. ... read more

We got into Metro after selling our spare ticket to a very grateful girl at the front. Irene went to put our coats away and got directed and redirected a million times...not so happy about it when she finally got back! We found a place pretty near the stage - after some weird girl seemed to find it a problem if someone stood in front of her....at a GIG! Opening with "How To Be Dead" from their "Final Straw" album, Snow Patrol took the stage. Lead singer Gary Lightbody obviously likes to talk during the show.....however he was pretty funny most of the time! From complaining about spiders and his "allergy to Sharks, particularly when they bite" to numerous self depreciating comments regarding "how annoying it is that all our songs just end suddenly, we really ... read more
