Day 20 (23/11/16) Rainy day today. After being up most of the night with the caravan roof leaking, have decided to stay in to make sure we don’t get flooded out.
Day 21 (24/11/16) Up early for the 90KM drive to Woods Point, an old gold mining town. It took ages to get there, with around 50KM of narrow, nasty gravel road shared with semi trailers. Not much to see, depending on what things you find interesting.
On the way back we saw a huge Wedge Tail Eagle. Unfortunately it happened so fast there was no time to get the camera out. We drove to Lake Eildon lookout where the views were spectacular.
Next we headed to Jamieson Brewery which I was dying to see, only to find them closed for renovations. Not happy!!! Went to the Delatite Winery for Deb to get sauced, then drove up to Merrijig for a quick look around before returning to the caravan.
Day 22 (25/11/16) Up early again for the drive up to Craigs Hut, from the movie The Man From Snowy River. The drive was hairy, with a narrow dirt road with
mini buses coming the opposite way to contend with. Also saw a wild deer on the way up; could not believe how large it was.
We passed the car park for the hike to Craigs Hut & took the 4WD only track; lots of huge ruts & a big test for the Nissan Pathfinder. We took it slowly with Deb having kittens that I even dared to go up this track! The Pathfinder did the job quite easily despite the number of hairy spots we encountered.
Once at Craigs Hut, the view was brilliant as we explored not just the hut, but all of the surrounds as well before making our way back down the narrow gravel road.
Once back to the main road, it was all uphill to Mt Buller. The village is quite compact compared to the Falls Creek & Mt Hotham, but nicely set out. It was too cold to climb to the peak, with wind chills of around -5C. We will have to save that for another time.
Next we headed to Sheepyard Flat on the Howqua River, exploring several kilometres of river. We were astounded at the number of campers in
the area (including caravans, which would not travel well on the gravel road) which resembled Christmas shopping parking; far more than we had envisaged.
After such a long & tiring day, we headed back to the caravan before taking the short walk down the road to the Mansfield Hotel for a well deserved dinner.
Day 23 (26/11/16) Back down to the Howqua River again, this time visiting Frys Hut. Like Sheepyard Flat yesterday, this area was also chock full of campers & a couple of 4WD clubs. Also checked out along the Delatite River at some of the nicest country scenery around.
Deb went into the Farmers Market in Mansfield, picking up some goodies along with a leisurely stroll before the temperature started to climb.
Day 24 (27/11/16) Sadly our last day of the trip. Deb did the washing whilst I checked out the rivers once more. The warmer weather making the fish less than cooperative. Feeling tired, but have thoroughly enjoyed the holiday. Resting up in the van before the drive home tomorrow. Too warm today to do much. Car might even get a wash as it is caked
in dust!
