Today was another two-hands-on-the-wheel-and-no-texting-as-you-drive day. I was heading inland and of course that meant the typical narrow, winding roads of the Otway Ranges. First stop was a short hike through a rain forest - Maits Rest. A wonderful short stroll, perhaps 2 km in length, through a rain forest. The lush greens, ferns and trees native to the area were in abundance. To add some ambience, there was a light mist of rain as I completed the walk. Next, off to Cape Otway Lighthouse which they market as "Australia's most significant lighthouse". A lovely piece of land with numerous exhibits and obviously the lighthouse as the main attraction. As one would expect, very windy, and one had to be careful walking around the outside of the top of the lighthouse. However, the views were quite splendid with the waves crashing over the rocks below. "The sea was angry that day my friend". Finally, my last stop was a short hike to Shelly Beach. A walk of around one km to the beach. I was quite surprised at how small the beach was as it was only around 30 metres wide, unless I was there at high tide and could not make it around the jagged rocks. Day 8 started with a drive to Castle Cove Lookout with some amazing views of the beaches and surf along the Great Ocean Road. I then headed inland to try the Otway Fly Treetop Adventures. You basically walked along the treetops along a 600 metre long suspended walkway viewing the rain forest below from a different perspective. It is apparently the longest suspended walkway in the world. Nearby was Triplet Falls where there is a two km circuit trail leading thru a rainforest to the waterfalls and back. The lush greens of the rainforest were quite striking and were begging to be captured digitally. The last stop of the day was Johanna Beach. A short walk to an amazing beach with volcanic rock on either end. The swells and current are so strong this gorgeous beach is not considered safe for swimming. I of course just enjoyed walking up and down the beach and marvelling at the rock structures. I wanted to see few other waterfalls and sites in the Otway Ranges but when I saw the narrow and winding roads leading to these areas I quickly opted out. As it was my day ended at 6 PM so I had a full day. Tomorrow I am off to see the 12 Apostles; a major highlight of the Great Ocean Road.

Maits Rest

Many tourists at the popular spots. Chinese everywhere. But this is not the main tourist season so is much quieter. I have been on many beaches and walks alone.
