While I was on a flight to somewhere in Oz (I can't remember which one exactly!) I read an article in the Qantas in-flight magazine about a place near Ballarat, called Sovereign Hill. It's a recreated 1850s gold mining village, and I thought it sounded pretty interesting. And then I met someone in Melbourne who said he was on his way there, and that they put on a show every evening in which they burnt a building down. Now that totally made up my mind - I had to go! Ballarat was conveniently on the route back from the Grampians (the last stop on the tour) so I got dropped off there. I've just returned from a week in Ballarat. The town is about an hour and a half drive from Melbourne. I stayed in a "serviced apartment" which seems to be really popular here. I didn't have any internet access so that's why you haven't heard from me. They don't have many hotel chains. No one has heard of "Hampton Inn" and I think there are only 9 Hiltons in the whole country. Hostels and apartments seem to be the way to go if you are travelling around the country.
