Hi Everyone, I thought I would get this travel blog thing up and running before I get on the road (then in the sky). It is three days until my big journey across the sky, and I have been spending the last week back in Creswick. And the town has been kind to me! In getting me ready to take on the freezing temperatures in the UK, the weather here has been stormy and bordering on cold. I was thinking that I would probably get 40 degrees and then nearly die of climate change, touching down in the winter of London. But, it has been nice to get out in the fresh air and go for some good Aussie bush walks. Ahhhhhhh, smell that Eucalypt! Ok, so I do have some plans when I get to ... read more

While I was on a flight to somewhere in Oz (I can't remember which one exactly!) I read an article in the Qantas in-flight magazine about a place near Ballarat, called Sovereign Hill. It's a recreated 1850s gold mining village, and I thought it sounded pretty interesting. And then I met someone in Melbourne who said he was on his way there, and that they put on a show every evening in which they burnt a building down. Now that totally made up my mind - I had to go! Ballarat was conveniently on the route back from the Grampians (the last stop on the tour) so I got dropped off there. There's actually a YHA part of the Sovereign Hill Lodge, so I'd booked to stay there. When I got there I thought there must ... read more

Well, mom told me this morning when I was talking to them on Skype that I hadn't updated "all week".....guess that was my sign that it was time to make an update on here. Sorry that I haven't- just hasn't been a top priority as school has me kind of bogged down....plus, I was trying to soak up every last second of the weekend that I could. Well, my weekend got off to a great start as I caught the 8:22 train on Friday morning and headed out to Glen Iris where Theresa and her family picked me up and we made the trip out to Ballart. There, we went to the Ballarat Wildlife Park and I had one of the best days of my life! I got to pet and feed kangaroos. Now, I'm not ... read more

I've just returned from a week in Ballarat. The town is about an hour and a half drive from Melbourne. I stayed in a "serviced apartment" which seems to be really popular here. I didn't have any internet access so that's why you haven't heard from me. They don't have many hotel chains. No one has heard of "Hampton Inn" and I think there are only 9 Hiltons in the whole country. Hostels and apartments seem to be the way to go if you are travelling around the country. History Lesson from Wikipedia and local Australians The city is famous for Sovereign Hill and the Eureka Stockade. Sovereign Hill was the site where gold was discovered back in the 1850s. There was a gold rush and several mines where constructed. At the time Australia was still ... read more

VICTORIA - THE PLACE TO BE I almost didnt make it down to Victoria. This was thanks to an airport bus that decided not to bother running in the evening in Brissie. Luckily a formula-one-like taxi driver raced me round so I didnt miss my flight! It was probably one of the worst flights I have been on though as I was so hungover due to Jesse's 21st the night (and day) before... After crashing in my hostel at a late hour following the flight, I took a walk around Melbourne on a nice clear day - once again the sun had decided to follow me around Oz :) It's hard to place Melbourne, there is such a mixture of different buildings and feelings there. It's definitely the most European city in Australia, with some buildings ... read more
