Well, i've been living with the J's for almost a month now so time for an update. Not good news on the job front, i secured employment with Dominoes Pizza in nearby Sorell to be a delivery driver for them. This was almost 2 weeks ago. I'm still waiting for my first day of action in my 'company car'. I last spoke to them 5 days ago and was told 'we're still waiting for your pants to be delivered?' This was not a question, they just speak like that. Due to not having my own vehicle i will not be guaranteed regular working hours so i am also looking elsewhere.
Settling into a daily routine in a familiar place has been much welcomed after being constantly on the move. I am working on becoming a regular at the nearby bar (that often closes at 9.30pm due to a lack of personnel) and have already made friends with an 82 year old man and another guy who promised to take me fishing. However, i haven't seen him since and am still awaiting his call.
But i've still been able to get around to see the island thanks mainly to Jen
and Jonathan, who have kindly been giving up their weekends to show me the sites. A few weeks ago we went and stayed overnight in the 'city' of Launceston. In reality it is probably not much larger than Benfleet. I'd say that of all the places in Australia, Tasmania and in particular Launceston, is the closest in similarity to England. The main shopping streets are almost identical and each town houses it's fair share of 'chavs', or 'bogans' as they are referred to here. It's just once you get outside the built up areas that things change and you get some of the most spectacular sights.
I also went to the top of Mount Wellington and witnessed some incredible views, looking down on Hobart and the rest of Tasmania.
Last week Jen took me on a weekend tour of the West Coast. After the small setback of a mischievious windscreen wiper that decided not to work on the only day of rain that week, we arrived in Queenstown - our first stop - a little later than planned. Queenstown is an old mining town and it was here that i got to drive up, down and round some
More views
Views towards N Tasmania amazingly windy roads whilst taking in some great views. The next day was even better as we visited Cradle Mountain. The views here were spectacular and Jen warned me there was a possibility of snow at any time of the year although on this particular day we were blessed with brilliant sunshine and clear skies. Whilst up here, i found the starting point for the Overland Trek, which is something i would love to do but am going to need to find work if i am to afford it.
Obviously, being in one place i have been able to enjoy the luxury of TV and have spent many a day engrossed in the Australian Open. Yes, Andy Murray is still rubbish and was knocked out early on. The Open is in Melbourne where temperatures are currently 43 degrees, so i'm just glad that i am not back in my non-airconned dorm room right now! I can also confirm that Aussie ad's are probably the worst in the world and all come attached with a pathetic jingle that are all now trapped in my head. Weather reports also contain bush fire warnings which is new to me and despite not
yet having the heart to mention to the J's that fire is not actually a type of weather, i have seen the affects these fires can have on the landscape and how quickly they can spread.
