Warrambool on the south east coast of Victoria was surprisingly quite a large town with a very impressive 5km foreshore promenade bordering the beautiful and sandy Lucy Bay. Pete and I really enjoyed the bike ride there and back as the views are amazing and we think the locals are very lucky to live in such a beautiful area.
There are some lovely historic buildings in the towns around south eastern Victoria which have thankfully preserved. It is also quite fascinating to see that this area also has had a lot of volcanic activity with cone shaped hills, huge craters and crater lakes dotted around the place. Many of the lakes contain salt and today we walk of Lake Beeac. What an amazing experience to do and see! We even tasted it!
Tonight we are camped by the side of Lake Colac the only freshwater lake around here and the largest lake in Victoria and I hope we have a repeat of the spectacular sunset we had last night.
Onto Geelong once more where we parked in the RSL car park for the night, with their okay, after enjoying a delicious roast in their restaurant. Next stop was
the historic town of Williamstown which has so much character. We took a bus, train and tram into Northcote, northern Melbourne, so that Pete could buy a new camera and I am happy to say the long return journey was worth it as he was very pleased with his new purchase and should now be able to take much sharper and closer shots of these beautiful colourful birds in Australia.
We made the mistake of choosing a boat launching carpark for our night camp spot and what with being the weekend we were awaken from 5.00 am onwards with boats arriving! Will remember that in future I am sure.
Finally our trip to Tasmania is very close so today we parked two streets back from the port of Melbourne in readiness for our early departure tomorrow. We met our good friend Kyra for the day and enjoyed visiting the Shrine of Remembrance in the city followed by delicious meal at St Kilda. What a beautiful vibrant suburb with all its different restaurants and fantastic foreshore with its huge promenade filled with hundreds of people all out to enjoy the great beach and safe waters.
Once again Pete
did not sleep too well, thinking about our early start on the Spirit of Tasmania along with countless trains passing by and numerous skate boarders at 3.00 am in the morning! I somehow managed to sleep through most of this!
Boat sailing was thankfully fine with a calm sea. We did leave 1&1/2 hours late which was a bit of a pain but enjoyed the time to relax in our booked recliner seats where we just curled up with our books with the occasional snooze in between! Time just flew and before we knew it we were one the first off the ship and parked with several others in a free camp at Devonport for the night.
The town of Devonport is small with very friendly locals. We decided to stay an extra day here as we are camped in a beautiful bay with the ocean lapping metres away from us. We even had a swim today even if the water was a bit fresh and certainly cooled us down. Had a chuckle with our fellow neighbour campers this evening with all of us admitting to certain blunders we have made whilst on the road. Ours pale into
comparison considering the stories we heard of fences falling over after being backed into and even power cords being ripped out of power boards after having forgotten to unplug them. Even worse the same cord then wrapped itself around a tree and the tree was uprooted! Once the motor is started in a motorhome it is very difficult to hear if something has gone wrong unless it is very loud!
Visited some beautiful towns today on our way to Launceston including a huge historic home that was formerly owned by a female convict that was sent to Tasmania after stealing a horse!
We spent an interesting morning in Launceston at the Cataract Gorge where we went on a bush walk along the Tamar River before heading to our spot tonight which further up the same river at Exeter.
