For the next few days we will be “bay hopping” our way up Spencer Gulf spending a couple of days at Tumby Bay, Arno Bay, Cowell/Lucky Bay and finally Whyalla. After Tumby Bay it will be back to freedom camping, so we are taking advantage of the caravan park facilities to refill our water tanks in preparation, catching up on washing & cleaning and getting some baking done.

We had heard that Tumby Bakery is quite famous for its pies/pasties, breads etc so after setting everything up at the caravan park yesterday we made a bee-line for lunch and we weren’t disappointed; as it turns out it was a good job we didn’t leave it until today (Saturday) because they are only open Monday – Friday …… now what bakery isn’t open on a Saturday morning!

Tumby Bay is renowned for its fishing and is an ideal destination for all aquatic activities, but like a lot of the smaller seaside towns we have visited it is relatively quiet this time of year. There are a few nomads in the caravan park just now but we imagine it would be absolutely bustling in the warmer months. We made an observation the other day – we have met quite a good number of grey nomads on our tripping around and they have all been “anglo-Australians”, not one has been a “new Australian”; we don’t mean holiday makers, family units, or international visitors but specifically those who truly are nomads travelling around the country for months on end. We might be wrong; it is after all, just our impression.

Street Art is an attraction of the town – there are a number of locations where buildings have been painted as part of the Colour Tumby program – so we took ourselves on a little tour. The silos in particular have a wonderful mural depicting life in Tumby and at a specific point in the viewing area the individual towers of the silos appear to meld into one so that there is no obvious “gap” in the painting - very clever.

We were treated to the most amazing sunset on our last night in Tumby Bay – the brightest and most fiery we have seen on our trip.
