30th November 2008 - RAINY DAY IN MOUNT GAMBIER
Our first stop in Mount Gambier was the Blue Lake. This was exactly as it sounds......a big blue lake in a dormant volcanic region. We had a long walk around the top of the lake and had a look from all the viewpoints whilst simultaneously getting attacked by flies!!! The flies are one aspect of Oz that I will not miss when I leave!!! The lake was beautifully blue...the type of blue i'd like to bottle for a dress! The colour didn't quite come out the same on camera!
After the lake we drove into town to do some much needed laundry! After washing our clothes by hand all the time a lot had become mis-shapen so we needed to give everything a proper wash. We took our whole backpacks in and put just about everything in....I even took the clothes off my back!!! Don't worry though....I did put a pair of tiny shorts on and a clean vest top whilst I waited! Looked such a doofus with my trainers on too but it didn't matter as I didn't have to leave the laundrette did I?!! Well...I shouldn't have had to
but the owner came to collect the takings with his great big alsation!!! Great!! I had to walk over the road in and stand in the cold street for about 20 minutes in my fine get-up!!! Everyone that drove past just laughed!!! I looked a sight...and not in a good way!!!
Once washed we got petrol, ice, found a spot for later that night and then headed to the sinkhole! No....not the kind you wash the dishes in!! A sinkhole is a great big hole in the ground with lots of greenary in. Looks beter than it sounds!! We hadn't been out of the van 5 minutes though and the rain man came and did a dance!! It must have been the hotstepper because the rain sure came down!!! We legged it back to the van getting soaked to the bone in the process! No sinkhole for us today!!!
Due to the rubbish weather we reverted to a back-up plan and after an hour or so milling about in the van we headed for the cinema to watch a film called 'Australia'!! How fitting!!! Absolutely awesome film and everyone should see it!! The main male character is played
by Hugh Jackman & not only does he play a brilliant part as Drover but he is very very easy on the eye!!! We certainly didn't meet anyone like Drover when we were in the Outback!!! Nearest we got was a sixty something, balding guy with more than a bit of middle aged spread!!! No comparison!! On a serious note though...go see the film!!!
Following the film we drove and found somewhere to park for the night. A road side parking bay next to a park & toilets! Perfect!! Very very cold night though and I wrapped up so tight in my sleeping bag I almost cut the circulation off!!! I wish these cold days would disappear!!!
1 December 2008 - THE SINKHOLE!
There was some blue sky in the air when we woke...woo hoo!!! Still not warm but it was a start!! After a wash and teeth clean in the park toilets (glad it's night number 3....I was ready for a hot shower again!!!) we headed into town to have a quick look around, visited the post office to send some mail and went to the library for some free internet! We then visited the sinkhole...second time
lucky!! This time we were able to walk right to the bottom. Very pretty for a big hole....beautifully landscaped and well maintained!!! Worth a look!!
We were then back in the van and heading out of Mount Gambier. Had to stop for a hedgehog to cross at one point. I was sure I could hear him singing 'King of the Road' like on the advert....or maybe that was just me!!!
Can't believe it's been 2 months today since we left England!! Feel like we have done so much in such a short space of time and that time is passing so quickly!!! Doesn't feel like christmas out here either despite seeing christmas decorations up and hearing christmas songs on the radio. Strange to think that I won't be home for it!! Missing my advent calender too!!!
Oh well......on with our trip....I wonder what December will bring!!!!
