Edit Blog Post
So we have had a hard time getting internet to update our bloggy blog, so we have been writing on Erin's mac as we go and are updating to the website when we can.
The eggs we bought came in handy this morning, we had to make all half dozen or else we'd have fried eggs in the car by noon. So a delicious brekky of 3 plain eggs each, eaten from frying pans with the silverware we "borrowed" from V Australia. Us kleptos made do. 😊
We wanted to check out the other fresh water pool in the area, and had we had our swim suits on we might have taken a dip- the rope swing was very inviting due to the intensifying heat. We can not believe it's just the beginning of spring here. There is no way we'd want to be here during the summer. Next was a stop a bit down the road at another boardwalk, and we power walked this one to get our sleepy legs going and to have a bit of exercise before we got in the car to head south. This boardwalk went partly through the mangroves but since it's not
rainy season the roots were above water making the landscape look like something out of a scifi movie. Lots more beautiful plants and rainforest birds made up the rest of the walk. We had to contain ourselves from taking a ton more pictures of ferns. We can not explain our obsession with those things. We'll save you and not put up toooo many fern pics.
We felt very cut off from civilization at this point with no phones and internet (it was there but sooooo expensive) and had to make sure that we had our hostel situation squared away after we had revised our travel plans a bit. So desperate in fact that we stopped at a McDonalds to use the WiFi and ended up grabbing lunch- they had the weirdest things on the menu- we both ordered a chicken tandoori wrap, which wasn't half bad for MickyD's food (we think they call it Maccay's here). After getting advice from a few sources we feel more secure and sure about our plans so we bypassed Cairns 9a tough decision for die-hard divers) and headed up in elevation to the Atherton Tablelands.
The air got cooler, thankfully, so the
windows roledl down (did we mention they are not power windows? haha- at least the car has AC). The views of the ocean from the mesa were impressive and beautiful and the road was still windy. In the town of Kuranda we decided to see what the Koala Gardens were all about. The lady at the counter was helping us decide if we had time to go through the zoo and get down to Mission Beach by 7pm, and she just opened the gate and said to go take a free "quick peek" and to make sure to see the baby koala. What awesome people in this country! That was most efficient 15 minutes spent in a zoo EVER. We managed to see the adorable baby koala along with the rest of the sleepy bunch, cuddle a koala named Princess who was dozing off (apparently it was nap time for everyone), feed some wallabies, view the crocs and hit up the bathroom. Speed racers! Souvenir photos in hand we drove onward to Millaa Millaa.
The Atherton Tablelands are the coolest country we have seen, besides the beach of course. The whole drive wa so amazing and passed through crazy
hills and valleys and pastures. Everything is green!! We might have mooed at a few cows along the way (aka Jessa mooed at every cow we passed while Erin called her a loser). Quite a change from summer in LA. Outside Millaa Millaa is a 9 mile "waterfall loop" passing by 3 amazing waterfalls. We drove out of hill country and back to the coast by the time the sun started to dip below the horizon, and pulled into Mission Beach Retreat 20 minutes before they closed the office. Excellent timing. We checked into our double room, otherwise known as a closet, and ran out to the Woolworth's before it closes. You have never seen two girls more excited to go grocery shopping. We are soooo over paying double for food, so we stocked up for the next few days and picked up a bottle of wine for dinner. We had a lot of fun cooking, laughing, making dinner in the open air kitchen and enjoying the perfect evening weather.

When you said cuddle a koala I thought you meant "wish you could". it is soooo cute!
