Day 49 - Tamborine Mountain
So much for the tranquil night with only the wildlife sounds for company! Saturday night on Tamborine Mountain is party night! Camp fires everywhere, music and laughter - it was a right little happening zone but blimey was it cold!
We wanted to go off to the farmers market this morning, on our bikes! We decided that it was too far to cycle from the campsite, plus it was totally uphill and a 13 degree climb at that! We parked outside the IGA on Main Street and Darryl checked the direction of the showgrounds, good job he did because we would have gone the wrong way! Apparently you have to hold maps the right way up but I’m so out of practise what with having Tom Tom! Off we rode, it was a bit hilly and we seem to have ourselves some semi-automatic bicycles which is a bit of a novelty! They change gear when they want to rather than when we want them too! We persevere, Darryl fairs a bit better than me but it’s not long before we’ve reached the brow of a hill and find some para-gliders about to jump off the top!
It was a good excuse for a breather! The view from the hill is sensational and makes us wonder whether we’d have the guts to have a go, maybe one of us will but the other isn’t so keen! You decide which is which!
Onward to the Farmers Market we go, it’s still early but it’s packed and we now realise that all the traffic speeding past us on our way was heading here! Lots of locally grown produce, lots of arts and crafts, pretty much something for everyone. We have a great wander round and take a few taste tests including some locally produced curries which were gorgeous! A bit of an odd thing to have for breakfast admittedly! We’ve got visitors coming today, Simon and Danny are driving up from Surfers, so we leave the market and head back home. It’s not long before there’s a beep from a car horn and some friendly abuse yelled from the open window, Simon and Danny have arrived! We stop at the para-gliding send off point as there’s plenty more up there so we watch them run off the mountain side and fly like birds! One of us is getting keener
and keener on having a go!
Back at camp we put our market wares away, just some fruit and mango dip plus of course some of the curry goodies! Then we’re all off again to do some of the local walking tracks. The Witches Falls is our first trek and it zig zags down the steep mountainside through open forest with banksia trees and into rainforest with huge strangler figs. The lagoons are filled with water and there must have been plenty of insect and frog life down there but we didn’t look too closely as we were navigating our way across the fallen tree which gave us dry passage across the lagoon! The climb back up didn’t take too long so we decided to tackle another walk! This time we headed off to the Cedar Creek Falls track which is just down the road from our campsite. There are a series of falls here with fast flowing water and deep rock pools. There’s a walking track which runs down to the middle section but Simon decides we’re going ‘off track’ and we head off towards the first section of the water falls across the rocks! It’s good fun and
with walking boots on we’re sure footed. Plenty of other people have done the same and we meet families with young children playing on the edges of the steep water drops with seemingly no worries! The rock climbing (scrabbling to most people, climbing to Sarah!) was great and has inspired us to be a little more adventurous from now on!
We head back to camp as the boys aren’t stopping for dinner, they’ve got their new business venture to sort out and they’re moving into the new house tomorrow. We sit and chat and watch the birds before they take off for Surfers. Hopefully we’ll see them again before we head home and it’s been great to catch up after all the years.
We’ve built another fire to cook on tonight. We have Mountain Fire sausages with sweet & jacket potato with onion! It’s gorgeous and we’re really getting into the whole cooking on the fire scenario, for a start it saves us money if we can gather the wood ourselves and frankly it all tastes much nicer!
We’ve booked in to the camp for a 3rd night so we’re going to climb a mountain tomorrow so it
might be a long day!

Great breakfast
Only thing better than curry for breakfast, is chicken fried rice! Same old, same old @ work.
