Day 53 Leslie Dam to Warwick (just around the corner!)
What a great night we had at Leslie Dam, looking up at the stars and laughing because we couldn’t see our hands in front of our faces! It’s pretty spooky too! What a couple of scardie cats!
The sunrise was probably great this morning, we didn’t get up early enough to see it of course but we will make the effort to do that at some point! No alarm call either but our body clocks have settled into a natural wake up of 7am or thereabouts. It was a bright morning with a bit more wind than yesterday and a few less kangaroos! We wandered down to the shore line of Lake Leslie and already a couple of people had gone off in tinnies (boats) to presumably fish as it’s way too cold for swimming! We’d set up camp on the opposite side to the dam wall so decided to walk the distance and check things out close up. It was probably a 4km return walk so that’s easy considering what we’ve geared ourselves up to lately! Lots of bird life on the water but no humans other than
those in the boats! We did a bit of ‘off roading’ to get all the way round and then when it came to making our way to the dam wall we did a bit more rock climbing! Nothing severe though, no chains required! One of the less attractive things we’re beginning to take notice of is people’s lack of respect for the land around them, the amount of rubbish consisting of plastic bottles, glass bottles, drink cans, bloody McDonalds cartons and cups and used nappies was astronomic. We really do wonder what goes through the brain matter when it’s deemed easier to leave your McDonalds drink container on the ground by a dam than it is to throw it in a bin less than 8ft away and directly in front of you! Is 38 any age to start this sort of ‘grumpy old git’ attitude?! Despite the bits of litter, Leslie Dam is a fabulous place to walk around. It’s tranquil yet full of bird and wild life at this time of year. There’s nobody at the Dam so we can’t go any further than the ‘No Entry’ gates but we can stand on the top and see just how
deep the dam could be but it’s only at 14% of it’s storage level. Its overall capacity is 106,200ml and its current level is equal to 14,000ml so water is still precious in Queensland and, as an example, showers should be limited to around 4 minutes and you should conserve as much water as possible. The dam in the last year has never been more than about 17% full. We wonder when it was ever last ‘full’ but later chatting to Uncle David he doesn’t think it ever has been.
We pulled out of the Washpool Reserve Campgroup, Camps 5 Queensland 792 and headed back to Warwick to the Big 4 site there. We wanted to try and catch David at lunchtime to invite him to dinner at the caravan this evening. It was great to see him and he looks very well after his 3 month trip around Europe. He accepted our dinner invitation so we sped off to Woolies to get some supplies of ‘Chook’ and fish. With a full trolley we headed to Big W to see if they had any camp stoves as we’re cooking more and more on campfires now so feel that a
camp stove would allow us to expand our options! We won’t get to use it while we’re in Warwick as it’s not that sort of site but you’ll be the first to see the pics when we do!
Back at camp we get ready for David coming over for dinner. He arrives just as we're finishing a Skype call to Mum and Dad K who saw us on line so rang! We have a great dinner, complete with fabulous home made cake by David, and arrange to do something together on Sunday, it means us staying an extra day but we’re more than happy to do that in order to spend some time with him. We think we’ll either go to Stanthorpe or visit one of David’s friends, we’re easy what ever we do.
So tomorrow we’re off to Kilarney, Queen Mary Falls and Boonah! Should be a pretty fun packed day of waterfalls, walks and cutesville towns!
Crikey it’s quarter to midnight!!
Night night
