windsurfer!
he seriously flew above the water Hey Everyone,
I'm super busy with assignments but I thought I'd quickly update on last weekend. We went to Surfer's Paradise and stayed at Griffith University with Nichole's friend Erica. Griffith was a really nice campus, it looked very new.
None of us slept the night before because we had a 430am taxi and a 6am flight into Brisbane. Our flight went well but when we got into the Brisbane airport it was raining! We left Melbourne to get away from the rain and it followed us to Brisbane where it's usually really sunny. We took a train for an hour to Surfer's Paradise and then to a bus that took us to Griffith. Matt said he felt like he was in a children's book about transportation because in one day we were in a taxi, plane, train, and bus! Hahaha. That day we were super tired so Erica showed us around Griffith, we watched James Bond movie, ordered pizza, and crashed early. The next morning we woke up and went to Surfer's Paradise, a really cool area right on the beach. It was windy and a bit chilly so we weren't able to lay on the beach, but
we did get to watch windsurfing, which was so cool! Erica showed us around that area, we got kebabs and smoothies, explored a bit, and headed back to Griffith to shower and get ready for a night out! We went to a few bars, got caught in the rain, caught a taxi home that night, and fell asleep. The next day basically just consisted of more exploring Surfer's and getting familiar with the area. I really enjoyed it there and wouldn't mind checking it out on my next trip to Australia, and believe me, there will be one 😊 On Monday, we took an early bus to Beerwah, which is where the Australia Zoo is located. It's where Steve Irwin lived and where all of his work was done. It was really awesome to see that place, despite the rain. We watched a croc show, took a guided tour of the zoo but a man who was good friends with Steve, and he told us all about Steve's plans for the zoo, which his wife has now taken over. 40% of the zoos revenue goes to conversation, which is amazing. The zoo is currently about 75 acres and they're expanding
another 500 acres within the next 5 years. They're going to have a mini Earth that is very open for the zoo. He showed us the empty land that will become an Africa section. They're building an animal hospital as well. I think Steve Irwin was a bit corny, but he did some really amazing work and I definitely appreciate what he did with his life more now after being at the zoo. The areas where the animals are kept were very open and they had plenty of room, which was nice to see. Also, it was important to Steve for the keepers to walk the animals around the zoo so they got exercise and were able to get out of their areas daily. As we were taking the tour, we saw a few dingos being walked and some keepers walking around holding koalas. I want the koala holding job! We got to the airport after going on the bus again and flew back to Melbourne. We got back in around 130am and we were so exhausted. I went right to sleep and didn't wake up the next day until 230PM! I've never slept that late before! All the travelling
crikey! haha
at the zoo watching the croc show really took it out of me.
Lately I've been working on papers and trying to get everything sorted out before dad gets here...in less than a week! I'm really excited. We'll be going to Uluru next week so the next blog will be really awesome, promise! Also, I'll be flying home July 3rd! It's getting so close. I'm very excited to get home and see everyone but at the same time I'm dreading saying goodbye to all my friends here. It's going to be a really tough day, very conflicted feelings! I can't believe my time is coming to a close so quickly. I feel like I got here 3 weeks ago, not that I should be leaving. I'm trying not to think about it too much and just get my assignments done so I can enjoy myself and my friends before I go home. Anyways, sorry this isn't the best blog ever! It's late and I'm all typed out from these papers! Love you all, enjoy some of the pictures!
xoxo,
Amanda
