Day 109 - Thursday 17 January
I had to check out by 10am and for the first time since leaving the uk I had a hangover. To make matters worse its a bad one. Luckily I'd packed last night and somehow I struggled to reception to claim my free minibus ride to the bus station.
After visiting the toilets there, I boarded the bus that would take me to our next destination Surfers Paradise. Its a couple of hours journey so as I wasn't feeling well I slept the whole journey. I'm glad I did, as when I woke up I was feeling a lot better.
After checking into our hostel and having another hours rest I was ready to explore. Pretty much all the travellers we've spoken too have told us not to come here as they didn't like the place. They'd told me that on my last tour, and I'd listened to them. It was only as the bus had driven through and it was too late to get off that I regretted it. The place had looked great. This time i'm not going to make the same mistake.
Instantly I liked the place, yes
its very commercial but I don't necessarily think thats a bad thing. At least theres things to do if you don't mind spending a bit. I still had a bit of a hangover so popped into McDonalds for a cure. It was there that Russell hit me with the second bombshell in two days. His girlfriend Par will be joining us for our whole 3/4 month trip to South America. Not only have my accommodation costs now doubled (although still not that expensive), but I have to consider whether I want to travel on my own with a couple for that length of time. Its something ill consider nearer the time.
After seeing a bit more of the place, we headed back to the hostel for a bit before heading back out to see what the nightlife is like. Theres loads of bars, and there are loads of Australians here on holiday, it looks like a great place to go out. However as we were out last night and Australia is expensive we just had a look. We'll save the bars for a later date.
Day 110 - Friday 18 January
There are four big theme parks
here in surfers. Dreamworld, movieworld, seaworld and wet and wild. As we don't have good water parks back home in the UK we've opted to visit wet and wild. So after getting ready we caught the bus over. Its a sunny day so it was great fun on the slides. Although as its still the holidays over here, unfortunately it was busy and at times we had to queue for about 45 mins to do a 10 second ride but its still worth it. There were also absolutely loads of good looking girls all in their bikinis. At times it was almost too much.
At 7pm as the sun was going down above the main pool they show a movie which you can watch whilst floating on a rubber ring. Although i'd seen tonights movie Rush Hour 3 before it worth seeing again.
The park closes at 9pm so having spent the whole day there we caught the last bus back to Surfers. Being out in the sun all day had been quite tiring and as it was half ten when we got back we couldn't be bothered going out. We'd planned to leave town tomorrow morning but
as we like the place so much we're going to stay another day.
Day 111 - Saturday 19 January
Although were staying in the same hostel our 4 man dormitory was already booked up for tonight, so instead we are having to move to a 20 person room. I'd envisaged it was going to be too cramped and very noisy, so I was quite impressed to discover that apart from myself and Russ all the other roommates were girls. As it was 10 am they were all getting up and parading around in their underwear. I suppose there are some advantages to staying in a hostel.
After taking a longer than necessary amount of time to unpack, we eventually managed to drag ourselves away and stopped off at the nearby bowling alley. I haven't played in years and it showed. I was rubbish, but at only $5 a game (special discount for non-australians) it wasn't too expensive. We then headed off to the beach to spend the rest of the afternoon.
Its saturday night and our last night in town, so early evening we headed back, got changed and went straight back out. After calling into
a few pubs we headed to -5 degrees. Its a bar made totally from ice, even the glasses are made from ice and as the temperature is kept at a constant -5 degrees you have to wear a big coat and gloves. Its a bit pricey as for $30 you only get half an hours entry and one drink, or you can have two drinks for $35. As its something different to what I've ever done before, I thought I'd try it. Obviously we had the $35 option. After the half hour was up it was starting to get a little cold, so we moved on to another couple of bars.
