It's a beautiful day in Surfer's Paradise today and the sun is shining and there are ppl everywhere. This is going to be a quick one b/c I want to get back out there and enjoy it!
Fraser island was grand! The group situation turned out just fine in the end... the Korean guys (there were 3 of them) didn't speak much english but they were very kind and helpful, i.e. did the dishes all the time, set up and put down the tents, all that great stuff!! Our group had 8 - 4 girls and 4 guys. We all got along and had some very adventurous times! Fraser is so stunning!!!! In our big 4WD we ventured all around the island on crazy tracks through the rainforest, right on the beach, you name it! We got stuck several times and had to all get out and push the truck but hey, that's all part of the experience. The island is known for having lots of Dingos and sure enough we did see several of them, very cool. The island is dotted with beautiful small fresh water lakes, Lake Birabeen and Lake Mackenzie were my faves, crystal clear waters with
Lake Mackenzie
Susanna from Sweeden and I white sand, so nice! Fraser is known as the sand island and man was there heaps of sand!! We went hiking through sand dunes, it was unreal, the closest thing to a desert that I've ever seen that is for sure. The island itself is surrounded by the fierce ocean... the waves are incredibly huge and swimming is not advised... you'd either die from the rips of from the tiger sharks. Apparently these waters around Fraser have the most tiger sharks in all of Australia, it's the biggest shark breeding ground, definitly did NOT venture into the ocean here. All in all, I was exhasted by the time my 3 day 2 night 4WD safari was over but it was a really unique experience and something so different from everything I've done thus far.
I left Hervey Bay very early in the am on route to Noosa where I stayed 2 nights. I have a fabulous time! Noosa lived up to all the hype that I'd constantly overheard. It's a lovely little city with tons of great beaches (big waves!) and a National Park smack in the city - weird eh?! I did so much trekking (read, hiking) in
the National Park... definitly got my exercise in Noosa!!! My favourite trail was the Coastal Track which was obviously all along the ocean... passed by many surfers and great beaches, incl an unofficial nuddy beach (gross), and my first wild koala!!! It was adorable and was up in the tree eating leaves. Noosa was so great mainly because I was there with a bunch of ppl I had met earlier incl Beccy, Mel, and Jenny... it's so great reuniting all the time! We're all solo travelers and I know we'll continue to keep in touch and meet up when we can. We also met some other really friendly people at our hostel, which was called Dolphins, it was a real nice apartment syle hostel.
I spent one day in Brisbane, a Tuesday, and was very much looking forward to going out into the city to experience what I thought would be 'big city nightlife'. I was disapointed b/c apparently no where gets good and busy on Tuesdays which seems odd to me given Brisbane is a huge city. Regardless, I met up with a bunch of friends that I had met earlier and again, reunited with, and we still
went out and had a pretty good time! Since I only had one day in Brisbane, I tried to see as much as I could. I did lots of walking, through the Botanical Gardens, the South Bank Parklands (very nice), and through the city and the shops, it was a nice day and i feel like 1 day in Brisbane was enough for me.
I'm now in Surfers as I mentioned earlier and I think I picked a great day to come. Every Wed and Sat nights are the big club crawl nights organized by the hostels and many other companies... so, needless to say, tonite is going to be a big night (here's hoping). I feel like I haven't gone out dancing in forever and i really like to get out from time to time and enjoy some nightlife, who could blame me? My friend Jenny B from back home goes to Teacher's College here in Surfers and we're meeting up in a few hours for dinner and drinks which will be so nice.... Also, we're going to hit up the wed night markets on the Esplanade (again, good thing i'm here on a wednesday!) as apparently they're
very neat. I'm very excited for the rest of the day ahead. Tomorrow it's time to move again... off to Byron Bay!!
I'm loving Australia and it's hard to believe that I'm just over half way through my Australia portion of my trip. I fly to NZ Nov 22. I've seen so much so far and have much more to see though.... this truly is an amazing country full of so much beauty!!
