We arrived in Hervey Bay and were chuffed when we were all put in the same room. We met up with Nick from Sydney aswell. That night we drank far too much goon then went to the Night Club next door where the drinks were far too cheap to turn down and had a great time...we also heard there were over 100 Bull Sharks spotted that night only 5 metres off the beach!!
The next day feeling slightly worse for wear we chilled around the hostel until the Fraser Island meeting at 3pm...with most of the organised trips you have to go to a meeting to teel you all about it, organise you into your groups tell you what food/drink/essentials you need to take etc..
The next day we were all up at the crack of dawn fighting for showers getting ready for the trip. For those of you that probably haven't heard of Fraser Island... it is just off the coast of Queensland. it is the largest sand island in the world... so yes we were literally stranded on a desert island!!
We were so happy with the people in our group...there were 11 of us
in one car so me, ant, Meg, Chris, Louise, Charlotte, Nick were all together then an American girl called Becca and 3 Irish people Liam, Eifa and Louise they were all a right laugh and the 3 day trip was one of the best experience of my life. we were given a huge Land Rover Jeep thing and told how to drive it, pack it (with our 35litres of Goon, and 90 cans!) and most impotantly how not to get stuck in the deep sand!
We got a barge over to the island where all of the cars had to reverse on and Chris was driving first...he did an amazing job reversing the massive car/lorry on lol. the roads or deep sand tracks usually with deep pot holes and tree trucnks were very interesting to try and drive over. and there wer some scary moments!..Liam was the master of the dodgey tracks and all the drivers were very careful...thank god!
we were given a suggested itinery and on the 1st day went to see 2 lakes..the first Lake Birrabean was the most perfect place...no one else around...the whitest, softest sand i've ever seen then the lake was so
crystal clear and blue you couldn't have imagined it! the 2nd Lake Boomanjin know as the tea lake (cos it was tea coloured was still clear and as warm as a bath but looked less nice lol. we finally made our way to the beach where we could drive a bit faster and smoother on the hard sand...all we had to look out for we things called 'Washouts'... where fresh water flows into the sea creating invisible cliff drops upto 5ft! and you couldn't see them until the last second! but we were very careful and fine!
we set up camp behind a small sand dune on the beach... chucked our 4 tents out and started the BBQ... we watched th sunset which was amazing as there wasn't a cloud in the sky the whole day... sipping Goon the girls buttered bread then drank some more goon and waited for the burgers and sausages to cook. We ate like kings the whole time.
The next day...because of the tides we couldn't start driving until 10am... and we wanted to visit the Shipwreck we could see from the camp. So all the girls walked up the beach and left
the boys playing footy on the beach. The Manheo Shipwreck is amazing and has been ther since 1935 where it got caught in a cyclone between Sydney and Japan and ended up on Fraser!
Ant came and picked us up with the rest of the boys and was absolutely chuffed to be driving such a massive vehicle along the incredible beach...he said it was the most exciting and best thing he has ever done in his life! Ant drove really well all the way up the beach to the top of the Island to Indian Heads which is a bid hill where at the top you can look over the rest of the Island and in the crystal waters of the sea we saw turtles, dolphins, stingrays and lots of fish! it was an amazing sight!...in the meeting we were told under no circumstances was it safe to go in the sea because of the deadly jellyfish and Tiger Sharks!
We then had very sandy sandwiches for lunch and headed inland to Lake Wabby... basically its a lake at the bottom of a HUGE sand dune...and apparently the lake won't be there in about 10-15 years time because the
sand is swallowing it up!... we had great fun jumping off the sand dunes and Ant and Nick swam all the way across the lake and back.
We had a bit of trouble finding where to camp that night... you it near impossible to drive at night because the headlights were never on the ground because of the pot holes! so we settled in Central campsite where we had to be quiet by 9pm...and you all know what Ant is like after a couple of cans!!
The next morning we were up and packed and left (after using real toilets!) and were at Lake Mackenzie by 7.55am!! we were the only ones there and decided to have breakfast first... we had loads of meat left from the butcher's pack so we had a lovely breakfast of cornflakes...then steaks...then sausage sarnies!!! haha the cooks Ant and Chris were very good!
We then went to the most famous lake on Fraser Island...Lake Mackenzie... it was like nothing else i've seen before and we were soooo lucky to be the only ones there. the water was beyond crystal clear and the bluest of blue! it was so warm aswell. we took
lodsa of daft pictures and had a great day there. more and more people kept arriving all of the time and we realised how special it was being the only ones there!
We headed back to the barge and got back to hostel... we had to unpack everything and it was all counted so we got our bonds back..we then checked in and went to our room... a massive dorm more like a flat! the hostel has resident possums we saw they are soo cute!
Well thats it!! your uptodate! me and Ant are going straight to Arlie Beach tonight looking forward to a lovely 12hour bus journey! and we have our Whitsunday sailing trip on the 9th!
Hope everyone is ok and the Summer is slowly beginning in the UK!
Chow for now xxxxx
