From Rockhampton, the 100km roundtrip to Yeppoon and Emu Park is a lovely seaside escape.I’d forgotten all about the beach and it was bliss to walk on warm sand again.
Yeppoon is a bustling little town with plenty of shops and cafés whilst Emu Park is much smaller and offers gorgeous views over the Keppel Island group. Most tourists come here to visit the islands which, being within 20km of the shore, are very accessible.
After our Fraser Island trip, we hadn’t really planned to visit another island so soon, but Sail Capricornia were offering day cruises to adults at children’s prices during the month of July. So on the morning of Sunday 1 July (no flies on us!) we left Rosslyn Bay Harbour on beautiful sailboat Grace. The weather was perfect: blue skies, warm sunshine
and calm waters, but also just enough wind to hoist the sails. It was an amazing day. Anthony and Vicki, who own the cruise company, skipper Grace themselves and provide yummy lunch and snacks throughout the day. We moored off Great Keppel Island for a snorkel over the reef before sailing on to Middle Island to enjoy the beach and the stunning views from the top of the island. We had decided to swim to the island from the boat and Anthony even ferried our belongings to the beach for us. What probably really made the day was the great group of people onboard. Funnily enough, Melburnians were by far in the majority: we met a lovely German/Italian family that live in Brunswick and a Yeppoon family whose daughter lives in Thornbury! I relished the opportunity to chat in German and we both thoroughly enjoyed the company.
In the evening we drove back to Emu Park to cook a BBQ dinner in the park. That’s where we met some more lovely people – two backpackers from Belgium – with whom we chatted over dinner. All in all, a very nice day :-)
