4x4
OUR 4x4!!!! So we spent the last 3 days and 2 nights on Fraser Island. It was a totally amazing experince that I don't think we could repeat.
We booked on tour through Dingo's in Rainbow Beach which basically meant John and I were put in a group with 9 other people, given a 4 wheel drive van/truck, some tents and some food and sent off for the duration of the trip. Those that wanted to drive were told all about how to drive a 4WD vehicle and other handy hints and tips (like how to avoid getting stuck) and then we were off. Ohh, oh lots of fun driving a big toy! Felt like a Tonka toy!!
We caught the ferry to Fraser Island from Inskip point so the journey was only about 7 minutes. When we got there we were a bit restricted by the tides (because you are driving on the beach you can't drive during high tide!!) we headed for a camping ground near to lake Wabby. We set up camp had a bite to eat and headed for Lake Wabby for a swim. We were advised not to swim in the sea due to the high
All clean..
..must be the start of the trip!! concentration of sharks and other creatures ready to take a bite, just wanting to taste the European food no doubt!!
The walk was supposed to take 20 minutes but I guess all the burgers and chips have taken there tole and it took me nearer an hour walking over hot sand dunes and wondering if we would ever make it. It was tough walking but worth it. When you took in the views as we walked over the sand dunes they were amazing. It was like being on another planet. Well said H, I (j) even went for a dip in the water, cor just a little cool!
After everyone had baked a while in the sun we headed back to camp for tea and cracked open the beer. I think its fair to say that everyone had great fun. After a few beers it didn't even seem that bad having to dig a hole in the sand to use as a toilet!! But I don't think it is something I would ever get used to. We had our first encounter with the wild dingos, something not to be messed with as they have been known to eat
Another Big Beach!
Can you see the end of the beach? humans. But even that was exciting and fun and once we got used to them being around and remembering not to go off alone you kind of forget they are there. Cute little puppies really, although I didnt feel like scratching thier bellies!!
The following day we headed up the east coast of the island stopping off at Eli Creek and the Maheno Wreck. Eli Creek was cool as you could walk up a walkway along side the creek and then walk back down the creek itself. I really enjoyed this and found it strangely relaxing. After a quick stop at the Maheno Wreck, we headed up to Indian Head which was pretty cool. I opted not to make the walk up the hillside but still caught sight of whales or dolphins in the sea.
That evening the partying got into full swing, sorry no pictures guys I (j) got too drunk! I think I even got into singing one of the songs from Top Gun in which everyone promptly joined in a the right time! What a fantastic evening! I (j) met a couple of german friends and we all decided to learn how to play with
20 Minutes trek.....
Yeah right!!! more like 1 hour. fire! Yes thats right, although not quite with fire but the practise balls on bits of string like in Thialand...
Our Final day was spent at Lake McKenzie. It was really awesome. the water was crystal clear and freezing cold, and I think nearly everyone went in for a quick dip. Its difficult to describe Lake McKenzie, its more about the feeling when you see it than the view itself. But take a look at the photos - they don't really do it justice, you have to be there!!
The drive off raod was really something else, lets just say that at times I was unable to see over the front of the bonet of the truck cos it was so steep! Its really amazing what those Tonka toys can do!! I'm glad I was not in the back, poor buggers must have been all over the place! The low gears were a bit like driving a tracker, very slow but very high powered!!
Hannah says it well, "a totally amazing experince". Hummmmm.. (big sigh)
