Arrived in Hervey Bay around 9.00pm. Got up early and booked to go to Fraser Island for the day.

Caught the Fraser Island ferry and joined our 4-wheel drive tour. The whole island is composed of sand, and supports the only sand growing rainforest in the world. Driving to 75 mile beach, we spotted a young dingo on the road side, and various other birds etc.

75 mile beach is amazing, and stopped off to see the coloured sands of the Pinnacles and the wreck of the cruise ship Maheno, which came ashore in 1935.

After lunch we walked along sand tracks through forests of scribbly gum and huge satinay, brush box and kauri trees to Central station, a former forestry camp. Fraser Island has a past largely associated with the logging industry. It is now a protected national park.

We then swam in the crystal-clear blue waters of Lake Birrabeen (a perched lake!). The sand is incredibly white due to the high silica content, on hearing this Debs proceeded to polish her jewellery in the sand.
