After a six hour coach journey i arrived in Rainbow Beach, the hostel i was staying at was right next to the greyhound stop so i didn't have to go far, my room was quite nice if not a little dated but the beds were comfy which was all i cared about, i left my things in my room and went for a walk to explore the area, in the afternoon i had a briefing on what to expect on Fraser Island, and i met the group i was going with, that night they had an aboriginal night at the hostel with a BBQ so i had kangaroo steak and snags (Sausages) for dinner then watched as the chef and the barman played a Didgeritwo! Apparently these are really rare as they don't really carve out
didgeridoo's they find logs that have been eaten from the inside by termites so to find a log suitable for a Didgeritwo is very hard, after that i had an early night because we had to leave early to collect our 4WD Car.
After collecting the car (a Toyota Troop Carrier) and packing all our things on the roof we drove to the beach
Didgeritwo
This is a double didgeridoo, which is very rare to catch a barge over to Fraser Island, Fraser is the largest sand island in the world and there's a rain forest as well it is also a really good place to see wild Dingos although we only saw one, we drove along Hook Point to a place called Eurong then we went inland to Lake McKenzie which was really beautiful and some of the group went for a swim but it started to rain a little so we drove to our camp site in the rain forest and set up the tents but i thought I'd be different and sleep in a hammock outside which was all good until the early hours of the morning when it
got cold so i didn't really sleep very well but it was an experience to say the least especially waking up and seeing trees all around you.
We packed up our things and headed off quite early as we had to stick to an itinerary and we could only drive on the beach at set times due to the tide, we drove back to Eurong to grab a few supplies and then drove to Lake Wabby which was stunning, there were
Our Car
The Car was called Stella apparently fish and turtles swimming around and the water was so nice, after going for a swim we headed off again further up the island to a beach site where you could camp, we set up camp again and then played football on the beach, that night the sky was a plethora of stars i have never seen so many so clearly before you could see the milky way and Orion's belt and the Southern Cross which is the constellation Australia has on its national flag, and after being patient and looking up for ages i saw a shooting star which was an amazing sight, apparently there very common in the southern hemisphere but I've never seen one before, also the ocean seemed to glow which turned out to be plankton! Apparently the plankton gives off light when its disturbed so we moon walked along the beach and watched as it glowed beneath our feet. Some of our group slept on the beach but after not having much sleep the night before i decided to sleep in the tent, in the morning just before we set off we saw a massive lizard which i think was a monitor lizard on a
tree near to where we slept.
We drove to the northerly most point of the island to a place called Indian Head where you could see for miles all around Fraser and i saw a shark, some sea turtles and a ray. We then drove back down to the Pinnacles which we didn't stop for as it was just some large coloured rocks, then onto a shipwreck called the Moheno (Meaning Island in Maori) which sunk in 1935, the ship was the first triple screw steamer made and was built in Scotland in 1905, over several years the ship had changed hands until finally being bought by a Japanese company who planned to melt it down for scrap but when they were towing it a cyclone hit the ship and it was grounded on Fraser island, the wreck had a bit of an eerie feel to it and even though it has been there for over 70 years you can still make out the different parts of it, shortly after heading off again a plane landed only a few feet away from the car which was so odd but the beach is a landing strip as well as a
road, we drove down to Eli Creek where we went for another swim and people were going along it in rubber dingies and canoes we then drove further down past a place called Happy Valley towards Hook Point to catch the barge back to the mainland but because of the tide we had to drive inland along a gravel road which was very bumpy and then caught the barge back, on the way i saw dolphins swimming along side the barge but every time i went to take a photo the disappeared, after returning the car we went back to the hostel and had something to eat. Next I'm off to Noosa which I've heard is really nice but quite expensive but apparently from here it gets more and more expensive the closer to Sydney you get.
Take Care everyone
Love Alex
