Unbelievably, I got pretty much the best sleep ever, quished into the big tent/hut with 10 other people!! Madness! We all got up at about 5:30 am, so that we could be out on the road (well the beach....how cool is that?!) for the tides and so that we could get off the camp as soon as possible and have our brekkie on the beach!! We drove for about an hour or so, all in a rather zombified state! We arrived at our first stop og the day which was a stop called Indian Head, a kind of headland that looked out over the sea. We sat on the beach before we walked up and Amy cooked me an awesome breakfast, which we sat and ate on the beach - what a way to start your birthday!! Once we were packed up again we headed up to have a look at the view. It was pretty awesome, you could see all along the bay and suposedly people were always sighting whales, dolphons and sharks from up there, but we didn;t see anything then!!
We moved on pretty quickly as we were being eaten alive by the flies (no one warned
me about the flies in Oz, they're EVERYWHERE and they just don't leave you alone!!) we then walked along the beach the other side of the headland to our next stop, the Champagne Pools, apparently they are sea pools that are supposed to look like pools of swirling champagne but we went at high tide and didnt really get the effect!! The water was freezing and the waves so strong that they picked us up and plung us on the razor sharp rocks so that we all cut our feet!! Fun times!! Amy and I didn't really stick around there all that long as we were both cold and wanted to go back up to Indian head as it was so pretty, so we left eceryone behind and went on our way. We sat up there for a while on our own looking out to see if we could see any whales or anything when I saw a big pod of dolphins swimming beneath the surface, but they swam off really quickly! Slowly but people more and more groups joined us and we did eventually spot a whale really far out to sea, but we could see the spouts of
water shooting up as it surfaced and at one point I saw the tip of it's tail as it dived dow, it was awesome - and on my birthday too!! We eventually dragged ourselves away and went to join the rest of the group to head onto our next stop for some lunch and to pick up some ice for our cool boxes. As it was my birthday and we were already into our second day I decided to have a go at driving the 4x4. It was ace, I had so much fun driving along the beach right by the sea. There were a few scary patches where there were little rivers of fresh water running into the sea that seemed far shallower than they actually were but on the whole it was all good, until we stopped at the picnic point where the 3 Swedish girls told me that they thought I'd been driving recklessly and far too fast!! WHAT??!! ME, Driving recklessly??!! So what if I was!!! It really upset me though, as they hadn't made any comments about anyone else, and yet I'd been driving slower than anyone else!! Party poopers!
We sat down and
had our lunch adn also all bought ourselves an ice cream from the little shop, which was lurvley!! We sat there for a while before I got back behind the drivers seat (that's right, it was my birthday and I was gonna show them reckless!!! 😊) and we drove onto an unsheduled stop at a place called Eli creek that we'd supposed to stop at yesterday. It was ace, there were a couple of Ozzie's set up there with deck chairs in the fresh water with their eskie (Aussie for cool box) in the water with them, properly settled in for the afternoon. the creek was gorgeous, it was freshwater and because of the white sand it was crystal cler, so much so that I quite clearly saw a bright green eel swim past me at one point. We walked upstream (easier said than down against the current) and then floated downstream as if we were on a lazy river! It was so much fun. We left there as the sun was starting to come down and made it back to the campsite while there was still some light left in the sky. We all sat on the steps outside
the hut, and while we were sat there one of the aborigines that ran the sight came over and gave me a shell for my birthday!! Apparently some of the girls had told them. I had a birthday dinner of spag bol and goon, and even had a slice of fruit cake with a match stuck in it so that I had something to blow out! Definitely a birthday I'm not going to forget in a hurry!! Happy 23rd to me!!
