We are now living in Cairns or at least that is the way it feels after our enforced stay due to dental necessities. A man on McLeod Street has now dealt with these issues (or so we hope) over a 4 appointment stretch, but sadly not at mates' rates.

As it seems with most of TFNQ (translated as Tropical Far North Queensland for those not familiar), Cairns is riding high on the construction and property boom. The marina and the lagoon have been completed since our last visit and the latter seems to have developed an appeal beyond that in Airlie Beach.

The backpacking party goes on unabated in downtown Cairns, with a fair degree of action still revolving around the Woolshed, P J O'Briens and the Central Hotel. In view of the potential for younger eyes reading the blog, we better not go into the detail but suffice to say the appeal of winning a skydive, white water rafting trip etc continues to fuel the average backapacker's imagination. Miranda settled for her usual mundane table dancing routine - 2 4 1 refreshments held more appeal for John!

As with Darwin, it's festival time in Cairns. A host

of events leading up to the big horse racing event of the year in TFNQ. John was too tight to part with the $72 each for the opening gig of the new INXS comeback tour and decided Jazz on the Esplanade was overpriced when he heard the quality - the wine went down nicely though! If only they'd got the Drumming Monkeys in from Darwin!

In between our dental commitments and utilising a bit of persuasive talking, we've managed to get out of town in somebody else's car up to Port Douglas and the Atherton Tablelands - Yungaburra and Lake Barrine. The $2 bus to Kuranda beats the Skyrail and train in the bargain stakes. We've also been a regular on the 1X Sunbus to the "boutique hideaway resort of Palm Cave (as quoted direct from a book just read)). The beach is as enticing as ever, but watching a little hammerhead get landed off the the pier and other sea tragedies you will have read about have not made the water too appealing.

It remains to be seen whether the big sporting event of the week will be the Cairns Amateurs horses or our re-emergence on the
