Crocodiles
This guy let the croc get so close to him. All good things must come to an end, and our time in Australia has been fantastic. I have loved it. In the days between the diving and flying to New Zealand we mostly headed into the rainforest area around Cairns. The day after diving involved sleeping as we had the luxury of a lie-in for the first time in a few days, and on Monday we also had an early start... back at the boat terminal for 8 so we could catch a boat to Fitzroy Island. Fitzroy Island is a beautiful little island with similar landscape to the mainland, forests and beaches. We walked up 1,000 feet to the summit and got some amazing views of the Coral Sea and the mainland. I also learnt a valuable lesson - hiking in flip-flops is really hard and hurts your feet. We had to clamber up boulders and through forest paths, and Australia has the most poisonous of everything so sensible shoes would have been... sensible, but I didn't think through what we were going to be doing that day and wore my beach gear. The worst part of it all is that there was a difficult path and an easy path,
we decided to do it in a loop, taking the difficult path first then wander back along the road. The road was closed, so we had to do the difficult path there and back. I was not happy, but had no choice, I survived anyway, and we spent the rest of the day on the beaches of the Island, the one we went to was called Nudey Beach (it isn't a nudist beach, don't know why it's called that), it was a really nice, coral beach, with great views back to Cairns.
The next day we went on the Kuranda Scenic Railway, a railway line that goes from Cairns up into a town in the rainforest called Kuranda. It gave us stunning views over the Barron Gorge and over Cairns, definitely worth doing. We then took a cable car back down, which was also really spectacular. Our final full day in Cairns fulfilled both Josh's and my final ambition - Josh's was to see crocodiles, mine was to eat one. We spent the day at a wildlife park and took boats through a lagoon full of crocs, and watch mad park keepers run around in croc enclosures and handling
Fitzroy Island
As we left on the boat. very dangerous snakes. In the evening we went to the best Italian restaurant in Cairns, recommended by an Italian, so it had to be good. I had the traditional Italian dish of kangaroo, emu, and crocodile on skewers. It was really nice, kangaroo was probably my favourite, crocodile tasted like chicken, and emu didn't have much flavour. So... that's about it for Australia... back to Sydney for a night, then off to New Zealand, where it's really cold.
