A tiny part of our view
And I mean tiny! More to come. After flying from Cairns to Sydney, everyone met up at the Tiffany Apartments, where I'm staying. We listened to the director spell out all the rules for living here, and after an hour or so, we got to move in. There was some room switching, so my roommates now are Jackie, who I've been with for the trip, Claire and Sarah who came on the second orientation, and Jackie who was on no orientation and Sarit who was on the first orientation with me.
I'll post pictures soon of our place, but it's pretty nice. We have a cleaning service that comes every day to take trash and towels, and another that comes once a week to change sheets and do some deep cleaning. The kitchen is really small, and one fridge is proving stressful for six people. I'm just thankful it's not six guys! Next to the kitchen is a sun room, and both of those rooms have a view of the Harbor Bridge and the Sydney Opera House!! From the main room which has a nice big dining room table, wrap around couch, and flat screen tv, we can see the ocean. Each of the three bedrooms are kind of small, with little storage space. That kind of forces us to be in the main room most of the time, which is nice having the roommates around.
Everyone had orientation for most of the week, but I lucked out and only had it Thursday. Monday and most of Tuesday I felt pretty sick, so I stayed in the apartment. It seemed I finally caught what 12 out of the 16 of us on the trip had. Wednesday during the day, some of us walked to Bondi Beach- about a 20 minute walk. It was kind of chilly and looked like it was going to rain, so we didn't stay long. On our way back we saw a liquor store with a wine deal- $4 per bottle when you buy 12. So we did. It's called Hooley Dooley, and it's not that bad. At night was our big VIP party at the Eastern, a bar within two blocks of the Tiffany. We received a VIP card that got us free entry into a few bars around here, and a free drink a week. Not a bad deal! By Thursday I was fine.
So to get to my uni, I have to take a train that departs from below my building, then walk through a tunnel for two minutes or so, then hang a left and walk along Broadway for maybe five minutes. Total it's about 20 minutes. However, on Thursday it took me forever. Nobody I asked knew where my uni was, or how to get there. Once I walked inside the walls of the campus, I felt like I walked back in time. Apparently the church on campus is the second oldest parish in Sydney. At one point they had to move it back however many feet to make room for a wider Broadway St. So they took it apart brick by brick, numbered them, and rebuilt it.
There were a few students there to help us, and once mass got out, a woman named Laura found me and the other three study abroad students standing around. I went to the College of Business orientation and met Joo-Gim Heaney, the business dean. After that I headed to a library tour. There are three and a half floors to the library, and I think the guy said it was originally a girls school. The rest of the building used to be a boys school. At the end of the day, the four of us got our i.d. cards and our timetables. It turns out the two classes I was going to take that count for my major, accounting and consumer behavior, overlap. So I had to quickly figure out what to do. It turns out now that I'm taking accounting, international business, children's lit, and australian history.
