Charters Towers, Cairns to Lakelands

25th July we headed off with Margy feeling sick, not good. We stopped at Balgal Beach, (No 37 Camps Book 6) a beautiful free spot, but it was full. We pushed on & we travelled through Cardwell & I got a shock, there were still houses with no roofs from Cyclone Yasi. The vegetation was still struggling & trees were still lying over. My heart went out to them. We pushed on passing sugar cane & Bananas coming good & we stopped at Kennedy’s Store, free camp if you bought something from the store (No 29 Camps Book 6). 26th July we pushed on to Cairns Coconut Resort Caravan Park which is a great park. We set up & left Marg laying down feeling awful & went shopping to get a few supplies. 27th July we & had a walk on the boulevard & saw the Marina & a few boats we could use as a “weekender” & had lunch & had a look round Cairns. Margy worse today. 28th July we went on a Kuranda Scenic Railway Tour on the train & came back by Sky rail, which we thoroughly enjoyed. 29th July Margy better, but still tired & washed out. We went to Rifle Creek free camp near Mt Molloy (211 in Camp 6 Camp Book). It’s a great free spot & by night fall was full. We had a BBQ & sat around the fire. 30th July we headed out for Lakeland Caravan Park, where we will leave the vans. We stopped at 2 lookouts with great views. The road was windy but good. We spent the afternoon trying to sort out what to take & started packing the car. 31st July was cleaning & emptying fridge & freezer & trying to fit everything in. Whew we made it. Off tomorrow on our big adventure via Cooktown.
