Having spent almost three months in New-Zealand and Australia, I tend to believe that the main reason the British Empire had colonized those lands in the first place was creating future vacation destinations. Think about it: send some convicts, religious sects and landless people to the other side of the world, and less than 200 years later you have the perfect vacation spot. Far, wild, amazingly rich, encompassing everything from volcanic mountains, glaciers and fiords through deserts and savannas all the way to tropical rain forests. And in the same time it's very similar to home - same food, same language (almost), same driving side. Ideal for the young student and for the old retired couple.
Ingenious. I bet it had been Captain Cook's idea - "I have found those lands to be particularly fitting for a recreation colony".
Damn shame there's no more land to discover.
