Nearly 2 months have gone by now since I arrived in Brisbane. A number of interesting events have occured since the last post. Leaving the best for last here goes:
With respect to my free time, I have gotten to know the city better. Together with some of the guys at the hostel, I went to see the public pools on South Bank which are great to relax and have a chilled out evening. From there it isn't very far to Knagaroo Point, a 200 metre long wall that used to be the source of the rocks used to build houses in the city. Now, however, it has been converted into a climbing wall for anyone with gear to use. Technically all I need now is some equipment to start climbing the around 20 metre high wall but until then I have had to settle for boulderig along the bottoms 2 metres to at least get it out of my system.
I have also invested in a new mountain bike which I have used a lot by now on excursions to other parts of the city and going to work. I rode to the top of Mount Coot-Tha and
had a go ont he dirt tracks. Great stuff! I am really looking forward to heading out with it a lot more.
Now to the most important events, the ones that will have the greatest impact on my life here:
To be honest, the timing couldn't have been more perfect. On one hand, the owner of the pizza shop where I have been working at on weekends and decided to close the shop after teh 20th of May. The landlord has increased the rent by a riduculous ammount. I knew this was going to happen at some point and it was always a pain to think about as I would have had to find another weekend job.
Now to the good part. This week we finally finished the refitting of the 24 metre catamaran and sent it on its way to Sydney. Last week I was pretty busy doing various courses including some permits that i would need on site at the shipyard, and another course that focuses on project management. On top of this, I was also called in for some trials on AutoCAD to check my technical drawing skills.
And now, the best part:
I had an interview with the CEO and CFO of the company on Wednesday. Actually, it was more of a formal conversation rather than an interview. They decided (or had already decided) to finally offer me a position in the company. On top of this they wanted to reward me for my 8 weeks of working for free by backdating the contract to one month ago, meaning I will get paid properly for one of the 2 months 😊
This month has gone considerably better than the last one and I am already looking forward to having the weekends off to go biking, climbing, surfing etc. etc.
The only downside to all this time over here is that i sorely miss everyone back home, especially Rocío. There is just something missing when you only get to see a pixellated image on a 5x7 cm screen. What is encouraging though is that once I start to earn a decent salary for australian standards, I might be able to go back for a couple of days earlier than foreseen 😊
A very big hug to all of you on the other side of the world! 😉
-------------------------------------------
He subido a Mount
