I arrived in Australia nearly 3 weeks ago now. I spent 22 hours in transit plus the time to and from airports. It was an exciting journey and a tiresome one. I took the Heathrow Express from Paddington in London and got everything sorted to get on my flight. The first part of my journey consisted of a 12 hour flight to Kuala Lumpur. 3 movies, a quarter of my book and some failed attempts to sleep later, I landed in Malaysia feeling sticky, tired and with a strong desire to brush my teeth.
The two hours in Kuala Lumpur went by pretty fast and I made the most of them updateing the most important people of my status. From there it was another 8 hours to Brisbane airport. I actually got to sleep a few hours on that flight aside from a few more pages and a movie at the end.
Once in Australia I didn't really get much trouble. I was paranoid as I had imagined to experience an episode of "Border Control" which was not the case at all. Aside from my passport not checking out on the first mew machines it all went smoothly. Getting
to the hostel was no trouble either as the shuttle bus would drop everyone off at their accomodation one by one.
To the hostel: it's good. I really enjoy it. Being in a residential area it is nice and quiet but if you wanted to go out partying, as a number of the people here do, it is only a 5-10 minute walk to the bars and a little further to the clubs.
During these three weeks I have discovered and experienced few things already. First off, with the current exchange rate, Australia is pretty expensive. Within the first week I spent around $AUS 500 which might be a little more then the weekly average now as I had to buy one offs such as clothes for my internship at the shipyard and food supplies. This meant that aside from my day job at Riverside Marine, I also had to get a weekend job at a pizza store where I earn around 150 to 200 dollars a week depending on how many hours they need me. This nearly covers my weekly expenses so that I dont have to fall back on to my savings too much until I
get hired at the shipyard.
Now to my free time:
Since arriving here I have been surfing once, at Tugun and Snappers Rock thanks to a friend of Michael. He lent me a board and gave me a lift and everything. An awesome dude.
Also I was able to watch a Davis cup match thanks to one of the ladies staying at the hostel with her sisters was working at the event. On top of this, a couple of us got together and made a great 3 course meal for Easter!
I also had the experience of having my hair cut at top speed by an australian asian as well has adapt to the opening hours of the hostels kitchen. A nightmare when you have to modify your cooking schedule to ensure that you have breakfast and lunch ready for the next day.
Also, today we went to see the Glass House Mountains qhich are a 1 hour train ride away. From there we made a 40 minute hike to Mount Tiborgargan which we intended to climb to the top of. However, after nearly 20 minutes the track became so steep that it was turning
Possum in the night.
There were 5 of these that appeared as soon as the lights went out in the yard. I thought they were cats at first. into more of a climbing session than a trek. Going up was not all that difficult with a little confidence. The tough part was coming back down with innappropriate shoes and wet rocks (it was raining on and off all day). So instead we did the ciruit around it and then headed back to the hostel to arrive tired and wanting a shower, dinner, and bed.
So, that has been my first 3 weeks in Brisbane. Let's see what the next few weeks await.

Ahora a mi tiempo libre.
