About two months ago as the weather cooled... my little ones said to me... "It must be time for the Ekka again soon Mum"
OH OH
So now that is is established that the kids think The EKKA is one of our family traditions see last years entry
The EKKA aka The Royal Queensland Show , we the parents had to suck it up, pull up our socks and suffer in our jocks... heee heee
So this year with generous monetary donations from Grandmas and Great Grandmas the kids were able to enjoy themselves to the full.
We started off in Side Show alley looking at each ride, to determine which ones they would ride (due to costs they were only allowed 2 rides 2 games) They have wanted to go on the Dodgems for many years but have been too short. As we lined up we were rushed on to the current ride - I tell my husband I am scared of Dodgem's - but too bad we were on. Lucky there are no photos as my face was in a permanent grimace as we got hit, bumped and tossed around with me holding tight to the wheel... begging
to be let off... "When is this ride going to end!!!" Basically I couldn't drive the thing and kept wanting to press down on the brake... which was actually the GO faster peddal - for breaking you take your foot off (how dumb is that!!! - totally opposite to nature!!) So needless to say today I have a sore neck!! Whiplash anyone??
Then we went to the Animal Farm and the girls got to hold some baby chickens and chase around the poor animals in the Farm enclosure... the animals were getting plenty of feed, so they were happy - the goats as always are a little pushy - but the baby lamb and cow were very cute.
We moved on to the Fruit and Veg displays and our girls were chosen to go into a Kids Cooking demonstration. They got to make vegetable pizza's and vegetable faces. Older Miss 7 answered a guessing question where the answer was "capsicum" which she called "Cats si crum" but close enough. Her prize - entry into a watermelon eating competition!!! OH NO!!! I was so surprised that she actually was winning and gulping that thing down!! She was
too far away to video it... but she was AWESOME!! Everyone was cheering for her.... in the end an older girl beat her, but she was only one bite away from victory... And she provided much entertaiment as she spat out the seeds and dribbled everywhere!! We were so impressed... I am thinking of entering her into other ones 😉
Of course as the Ekka is so expensive we make sure our kids go to all the free stuff. They collected lots of Fridge Magnets, book marks, colouring in, stickers, bags from the Police Exhibits and the Government departments exhibits. There was even FREE Rockclimbing with a free bag from the Department of Health. Miss 7 did so good.. bypassing some boys and making her way almost to the top... She always tries to climb the cliffs freehand.. so this is extra confirmation that we need to get her into a climbing class... Miss 5 was a bit too short and got stuck trying to find a handhold and a foothold - but they did so well, not scared - my girls are super brave!! and that makes me HAPPY!!
We caught the chairlift back across
the Showgrounds... previous years with prams and bags prevented this .. but this year with no baby (thanks grandma for babysitting!!) we were free to float over the length of the showgrounds... It was so much fun... we loved it!! We landed, had a famouse Strawberrys and Cream Icecream, rested and had lunch and headed off to.....
Then to the showbags and I am very happy that my girls said NO! to most of them... It was hard to find bags they wanted!! YAY!!! I am not breeding crazy consumers!! They ended up with a Sour Warheads and Cadburys - but only because the Cadbury's had Pokemon stuffed toys - we cant pass up a Pikachu or a Dragonite!! So that done we hightailed it out of there!!! YAY we survived!!
Off to the food tasting and we had the yummiest Triple Cream Brie Cheese of which we bought a slab and some crackers and afternoon tea was Brie and Crackers... OH I love my girls!! They have expensive taste in cheese and love Brie and Camembert... oh what an afternoon snack... YUM!
Then off to the Arena to watch the official opening by
the Govenor, the motor cross bikes doing cool flips and tricks, moster truck, and of course what the kids are waiting for THE FIREWORKS!!!
Then we take sleepy children and head off home with sore necks, headaches, tired legs, arms full of bags and freebies - and a smile on their faces!!
Which makes it all worth it 😊

Enjoy your family
EKKA looked like a real good time and a wonderful family 'tradition'. We are enjoying very warm summer days in Canada right now.
