The Atherton Tablelands lie behind Cairns and are home to numerous lakes and waterfalls, as well as some unique animal and plant life. Being highlands, they are also free of some of the coastal heat and humidity. I had intended visiting them anyway, but the news that all the scuba courses out of Cairns were booked solid for 5 days meant that I headed away from the coast rather sooner than expect...
