Hi travel followers.
well, another two weeks have passed and we have visited a lot of places and done a lot of things since the last blog.
From 1770 we moved on to Tannum Sands (just south of Gladstone) and I would have to say is much better than Gladstone. An excellent place to stop and is probably the best in the area. It has excellent walking and cycling tracks up to Canoe Point and the Botanic Gardens and while here we did a loop drive into Boyne Island, Gladstone and from there to Calliope and Lake Awoonga just to check out all the local places.
From there we moved to Rockhampton and spent a day visiting the Capricorn Caves which included a tour of the Cathedral Cave which was interesting, but not the best cave we have ever been through.
It was then the short move to Kinka Beach for a couple of days to check out places like Emu Park which had the “singing sails” sculpture at the lookout and a good view over Great Keppel Island etc. and then Yeppoon.
After Kinka Beach it was off to "Clairview" for a couple of days
and I would have to say the little Caravan Park here is absolutely fantastic. The town itself hasn't got much for the tourist, BUT the park itself has a wonderful bar and restaurant and a great beach for those early morning and late afternoon walks. I would definitely recommend a stop here for anyone travelling North.
From there it was on to Sarina and another couple of days touring to local area and beaches etc. While here we toured the "Sugar Shed", which has a miniature working sugar mill and do a tour that takes you through the whole process of growing and processing sugar from end to end including the sampling of the end products like Rum, Liqueurs, molasses and syrup etc. All very YUM!!!
After Sarina it was then on to Finch Hatton (west of Mackay) for a few days. While here we spent a day at Finch Hatton Gorge where we did the walk up to the Wheel of Fire falls and swimming hole etc. On the walk we also passed the Cascade Falls and many other great spots along the river.
On yet another day we drove up to Eungella and the Eungella
Chalet and then down to Broken River to view the elusive “Platypus” in its natural habitat. Absolutely beautiful. How many people can say they have seen them in the wild?
On Anzac day we visited a couple of services at Gargett and Finch Hatton which we were told were the largest they had ever had. Great to see a great turn out for such a small town and the local pub puts on a great Pizza and other meals at "happy Hour" each day.
From there it was yet another move on the Cape Hillsborough which was an excellent little spot to stop just north of Mackay.
While here we did a couple of the walks up over the cape to Andrews Point and along the beach at low tide to Wedge Island. At dawn it is also great to take a walk down and along the beach as the kangaroos and wallabies come down to the beach to feed while the sun is rising over the islands. Again absolutely beautiful.
I must also say, on many of our walks around Cape Hillsborough we came across what you could call a plague of "butterflies" of at
least 6 or 7 different varieties. There were "millions" of them and they had a huge liking for the nectar on the local Black Boy flowers. (Grass Trees for the politically correct.)
Hope you like the photos.
