Day 12
We’ve arrived at Kings Canyon Resort and found that in the Northern Territory, the term ‘resort’ is used very loosely. Facilities are meagre, their ‘General Store’ holds less than our local service station (although there is a plethora of cheap tacky souvenirs) and their pool resembles a duckpond.
Their washing machine did little more than wet the clothes, they all came out with the same orange dusty tinge they went in to the wash with. At $4 per load I didn’t really want to put them through again and I’m running out of daylight hours to get them dry in.
Went looking for a light lunch and found they had a half reasonable café which charged quite unreasonable prices ($81 for lunch! What the..?)
Still, we have a perfect site overlooking the Canyon, close to the toilets and away from other campers and the weather is warming up nicely.
Tomorrow we will go exploring through Kings Canyon.
Day 13
Today we trekked out to Kings Canyon to do the Rim Walk and I learnt that if you want to walk around the rim you have to climb up there first.
This was done by climbing up over 200 stone steps cut into the rocky mountain. All my boys left me for dust, even the 5 year old! But once at the top the views were awesome. This seriously has to be one of the most amazing experiences I’ve had. The walk was longish at ~ 3.5 hours but it was easy going, and everywhere you looked, whether across the canyon or right next to you, the rock formations were incredible, the colours just beautiful and yes, I took just a few (hundred) photos ;P
Back at the campsite, found that every toilet block has a latch gate on it, designed to stop dingoes wandering in there at night. A comforting thought if you have to get up for a 3am pee…
We didn’t see any dingoes the first night. However, by the second night they seemed to be everywhere. They started coming round the campsite just after sunset, sniffing round the table. Ryan was the first to spot them and was worried they were after his painted rocks that he had left there to dry. Then throughout the night we were treated to several howling serenades. That did
Matthew and Ryan on stage
The 'Resort' had nightly entertainment where Matt and Ryan got to go up on stage and play instruments while we all sang 'Give me a home among the gum trees". The guitarist (in the background) plonked the Stetson on Matt's head. actually freak me out a little, not having ever heard such a noise and only being separated from it by a thin canvas.
Morning light didn’t seem to deter them as one was still trotting past our campsite as we packed up the trailer to continue our journey.
