Darwin

This is our 3rd week in Darwin staying at the Howard Springs caravan park, a big park with good amenities,we decided to use this as a base for touring.

This last couple of weeks have flown by with some busy days and others not so, There are 3 museums here ,Aviation Military and a general museum and art gallery all worth a visit and the general museum is free , this one tells the story of cyclone Tracy with a very good sound booth which replicates the sound of Tracy and also the bombing of Darwin and the role the Northern Territory played in WW11

Darwin has been rebuilt since Tracy and is a well planned out city ,easy to navigate around, we took a tour bus with commentary around the city well worth it, you can hop on and off all day and see the various attractions.

This last week end the city played host to the V8 championships a 3 day event for the petrol heads, I went on the final day Sunday what a day, full of loud engines,dramas, and excitement, the main rivalry is between Ford and Holden, with other makes making up the field

Darwin is a garrison city with all the defense forces having bases here, it is not uncommon to hear fighter jets doing their thing in the sky and watching them perform intricate maneuvers above.One fighter jet even did a flypast at the V8 championships .The Navy has a base here as do the Customs patrol service. The harbour is very deep and capable of taking big naval ships along with the big cruise ships with a modern cruise terminal at the mouth of the harbour.

I have to say Darwin is a great place and well worth a visit with all its history and attractions,it's proximity to Litchfield and other great outdoor attractions makes it an ideal place to visit
