Day 12 - Darwin / Kakadu Trip
Another warm day, another warm night. I can get used to this weather. The humidity is bearable at 74% but the temps have been fantastic. The top temperatures are in the low 30s and the low in the high teens. Today we decided to give Berry Hot Springs another go. The last time we visited was Sunday afternoon and the locals reckon we were silly to go anywhere near the Springs on the weekend due to the sheer number of visitors. Therefore we were there at 8.45am and even then there was a small mini bus full of tourists in the water when we arrived. We got into the water like a herd of water buffalos and soon these elderly were moving on. It was quite pleasant to sit in these warm waters as they rush past your body in the form of natural spa jets. Nearly lost my togs a couple of times. Xavier wasn’t with us this morning. He went off to a half day fishing charter. In his words “I caught the biggest fish and I was the most experienced” hahaha (The problem is I think he was
the most experienced and he did catch the biggest fish). He did bring one home for us to cook and it was a reasonable size. Good to see he enjoyed himself.
At 5.30pm we joined a “Sunset Fish And Chip Tour”. Now in my normal fashion I made sure the family were at the wharf 30 mins before we needed to be there and Tracey and I copped a lot of flack for it. My son Paul reckons if we were there any earlier we would catch yesterday’s sunset. He is a smart alec at best hahaha. Anyhow we did get to the wharf early and there were four boats moored to the wharf. The first was an extremely large ship with formal dining tables set both inside and on outside decks. The second boat was a mid ranged touring ferry with multiple decks and inside and outside dining areas. The third boat was a fully rigged ship with both upper and lower decks. The last boat was a small single deck aluminium boat with dinghy type sides with a capacity of 32 people. Guess which one we got on. Yep the smallest boat.
Even though it seemed
disappointing that we didn’t get on the full service ship we were made welcome by the skipper and his two daughters. I then got uncomfortable when one of the daughters took us out and then floored it. OMG when it took off it held its head high and dropped its back in the water and flew out of the gate faster than I have ever experienced. Now mind you the daughter was still driving this thing and I found myself holding so tight to my chair that my fingers hurt. I wanted to ask her how old she was and whether she had a license to put my life at risk. Anyhow she slowed down after a few minutes and we were entertained by her dad and showed some sights. Now this was a fish and chip tour and there was no sign of any cooking facilities on this boat. Well they had no intention of cooking anything. They literally drove the boat onto a beach and the two daughters trundled up the sand to the local fish and chip shop and picked up their order of 32 fish and chip packs. Oh my god this was the best take
The daughter is at the helm and I am worried.
Obviously I was unnecessarily worried as she turned out to be quite competent away fish and chip meal I have had for a while. Xavier thought it was not up to his standard but I think he just wanted to cook his own fish. Anyhow getting onto the smallest boat turned out to be the biggest asset as the speed and the quick turns gave us all adrenaline rushes like no other. Another end to a great day.
