20/6/09 We have decided to stay till Monday 22/6 it is such a great spot. We actually slept in this morning. After breaky Den went in & got fresh water to put in our tanks, & we got talking to the couple next door & before we knew it it was lunch time. We decided to be lazy today so Den put the generator on & he watched the V8’s on TV & I had a rest. We cooked tea & had steak, salad & damper ( good stuff ) & sat by the camp fire till bed time.
21/6/09 Sunday. I think it is, you loose track of time. Another beautiful day by the river it is 16 deg. We had bacon & eggs for breaky & then we went into Camooweal & took a 20k’m red dirt rd to the Camooweal Caves in the National Park. ( so much for the clean car) We ended up at the camping area by the river , a nice spot & read all about the underground caves & river system, we went to look at 2 sink holes, they were very interesting. We made our way back to Camooweal with the
dogs in the back, they were good, filled our drums up with water again ( you get water where you can ) . Lunch time again & Den watched the V8’s & I mucked around on the computer. It has been nice to just veggie for a few days. I cooked beef stroganoff for tea & we tried to light the fire but it was too smoky, The neighbours from either side came over & we got into a great discussion on the state of the nation over a few drinks, it was good fun. One couple had been on the road for 5 years living out of a converted horse float getting jobs when they needed. A lovely couple , they are still deciding where they want to settle down, but they are having too much fun. We had our tea & went to bed after watching a bit of TV. On the road again tomorrow, It has been 30 deg today, but a dry heat, not too bad. There are about 30 vans by the river, but well spread out. We have done 6302 km since leaving Wollongong.
22/6/09 Well off again after saying goodbye to the
neighbours, we are 13 K’s from the Northern Territory Border. We stopped & had a pic at the sign & this is where it gets flat & dry & the road seems to go on forever, the road so far is good, we hope it keeps up . Then we came across a speed limit sign 130 kph, I don’t think we will be going that fast. We are on our way to Barkly Homestead & Roadhouse , we got there at lunch time & filled up with Gas - only 104.1 & petrol was 169.9 which we thought was not too bad. We decided to push on & ended up at “the Pebbles” no 20 NT in the free camp book. On the way we saw huge termite mounds, cattle & it seemed that we were going up hill all the time, ( don’t know if it was an optical illusion ) but Den kept saying, “When’s this hill going to end”? We set up at “the Pebbles & were amazed at the shape of the rocks & want to get some pics at sunset. There is only 2 other people here, another couple in a 4 wheel drive
& a single bloke living out of his car that has 2 tents, a TV Arial strapped to the roof of his car, & his gear is in the picnic shelter. Well have had tea & nearly time for bed, will go take a look at Tennant Creek tomorrow & go to the Devils Marbles. It has been hot today 31 deg & we even wet the girls down with a cold wet rag. We did 466 k’s today , a big day.
23/6/09 Up early & packed up & into Tennant Creek for Gas ( 78c ) & bread, we then went to The Dump Point & filled the van with water We will take a look at this little town on the way back from The Rock. We pushed onto The Devils Marbles, which are just amazing, all these boulders in the middle of nowhere & the colours, we will be spending the night here on the way back , to see it at sunset . We took a few happy snaps & Den skinned his knee ( I don’t know ) , we had a cuppa there & got going. We stopped 40km’s north of Ti-Tree
at a roadside freeby no 28 NT camp book, It was a bit noisy as it was right beside the road, but got talking to a nice couple that gave us a few tips on Alice & The Rock. We had our tea & we were in bed pretty early . 248ks today & I even had a drive.
24/6/09 On arrival in Alice Springs we marvelled at the Macdonald Ranges on the way in & the rock formations & colour. Alice is well set out & it looks like they are improving the town with a mall & there are lots of shops inc, K-Mart , Coles, Woollies & Target Country plus many specialty stores. We will have a good look around when we return . We booked into the Heritage Caravan Park, as only one that took dogs. But nice friendly Park. We are booked in for 3 nights . Got straight into washing the red dirt off the clothes & the dogs got a bath too . They are actually white & brown now , not a salmon colour. We went out & had to get a few things , like a shovel & we tried
to get an anchor , but could not find one, actually the girl laughed at us. We ended up at Harvey Norman & bought a 12 volt TV . We arrived home in time to get the washing off & settle in for the State of Origin ( which we wont mention again ).We drove 232 k’s today .
25/6/09 Well Den has been fixing up the TV today & we had to go & stock up on food & bits & pieces , Den has been reading up on the telly & I have been doing my blog & sorting out photos, hopefully tomorrow we wont be running around & we can work out what we want to see & do at The Rock & Kings Canyon etc & how many days we will be there, We need to book some accommodation . We will be back in Alice for a week on the 9/7/09 for the Camel Cup.
26/6/09 Into town to get a few things we forgot & we will get ourselves organised for
trip to The Rock & Kings Canyon. We will be away for 2 weeks & not sure what our
reception for
phone & Internet will be like . So if you don’t hear from us don’t worry. Catch
you soon .
