Day Twelve
Left Alice behind today with a collective sigh of relief. We’re all ready to move on and it felt good to be on the road again. Last night we went to a ‘star talk’, an organised event at the caravan park. At 7pm we trundled up the hill and listened to a bloke who takes his stars very seriously. He told us about planets vs stars; that Alpha Century is in fact two stars rotating around one another, not just one star; how to find the South Pole; and where the Milky Way is found. He pointed out many of the star constellations and the kids had a turn looking through the telescope.
Emma blogging now….Today we packed up camp at Alice Springs and started driving to Wycliffe Well, the UFO capital of Australia. Its kind of weird here because there’s all these statues of aliens and stuff. Tomorrow we’re driving to Daly Waters. A big pack of Galahs just swooped us. I feel sorry for everybody else having to go back to school a week earlier than me, not! Today we tried to hunt for yabbies but we didn’t have any luck. We found someone elses yabby
trap with 2 yabbies in it and Jack wanted to keep them. Ruby fell in the water. Hi to Nana and Pa and Ian and Di and anyone else reading this.
Jemima blogging now….today Joe and I watched Indiana Jones in the car. Our first stop was at the TiTree Roadhouse. There was 3 dogs there that had no home. Our second stop was at a mango place. In the icecream freezer there were frozen mangoes. Our third stop was at Barrow Creek. At the shop there, heaps of people had signed the walls. My Dad signed for us. People wrote on their money notes and left if there on the doorstep so that if they came back to the shop with no money, they could just look for their signed money hanging on the walls and use it to pay. There was a sin bin there too. All the kids got into it and Bron took a photo of us. Then we went to our campsite that we are staying in. We went to catch yabbies but the bait was too soft and didn’t stay on the string. Ruby’s leg fell in the water. We went back to
camp to get fishing rods, but Dad couldn’t be bothered.
Bron now. The country has changed dramatically today as we head north. Dry creek beds, dry river beds and signs warning us of flood plains where the water can climb to 1.4 m in depth. I would love to see the water cascading to those type of levels. The roads were straight, straight and straighter. We saw cows, more eagles and the occasional animal having that long long sleep on the side of the road. The temperature has been a mild 23 today. I am expecting that to rise in the next couple of days though as we head north. Interesting fact I read today, the dry season officially ends on September 30, just fyi! Had lunch at a small town called Ti Tree. Its claim to fame is it’s the most central pub in Australia. Before you think it, yes Rob and Ro did partake in a beer. Amazing Bar, made out of enormous railway sleepers. We admired the parma that walked out of the kitchen. Big, fat and looking delicious for a reasonable 19 bucks! We were all silently drooling. Then back in the car and headed to
Barrow Creek. I’ll confess now, I was a little apprehensive about what to expect when we arrived, think Peter Falconio/ Johanna Lees but was more than pleasantly surprised. It’s a fab old building and when you walk in the walls are covered in bucks ($$$) which the barman says are for his retirement fund. Visitors are welcome to sign a wall which Ro did on behalf of the 13 - 13 trip. Yes, Ro and Rob did partake in another stubby, I had a cider and Jac a cup of tea. Kids lemonade and a blue slurpy for Joe. There were dead snakes in jars of formaldehyde, hats, t-shirts, massive runners etc etc etc. You needed a key to use the loo which was attached to a giant fork, weird but interesting too. We could have stayed for ages and had a “bullshit burger” from the menu, purely coz we wanted to know what was in it. Anyway, more photos later and off to the UFO sighting capital of Australia, Wycliffe Well.. Speaking of UFO’s, the headline on the Northern Territory newspaper today was “Another Mass UFO sighting” Alan “Doc” McIntosh (no relation) together with Mr Aylett and Normie Hooker
said they couldn’t believe their eyes when they saw the bright light approach them at their station north of Tennant Creek. Mr Aylett said there was no way their judgement was affected by alcohol coz “me and Doc had a couple of quiet drinks but Normie doesn’t drink.”….. interesting heh. So we’ve pitched camp at Wycliffe Well amongst a giant pig, a few dwarfs, Elvis, the Incredible Hulk, The Phantom, Yoda and DarthVader just to name a few. Dinner of tacos, yumbo and a few quiet reds and the planning for tomorrow begins. Have I told you lately that I’m loving this holiday???
