We woke fairly early - Steven woke very early at 5am! - and were on the road before 8am. The Caribbean Motel had been fine, with a QS bed and a single bed in one room, and another QS bed in the main room for us - nothing posh, and a little dated, but a good spot to stop for the night
On the road, and Steven couldn't resist stopping by a roadside banana vendor for the best bananas we had ever tasted, and some of the largest bunches of green bananas that we had ever seen. We soon crossed the Urunga river and the view was so pretty that we turned off and found a gorgeous cafe right in the water. A few boats pulled up with clientele for breakfast, as we watched the water skiers and the fish all around the moorings. Add a great breaky muffin, a kids breakfast big enough for Steven and a triple banana pancake stack that defeated Tom - these elements prove it was a great find! We then meandered down through Urunga along the coast to Hungry Head - a pretty beach in the middle of almost nowhere. Back onto the Pacific
Highway, and along the Nambucca River to Macksville, as the weather became overcast and soupy - humid.
By the time we arrived at the beach at Port Macquarie, it was very overcast and grey, but stiflingly hot. We hadn't really understood when the guide at Byron Bay talked about warm and cold currents converging at Byron - today we realised that the ocean was 5 degrees colder here than at Dicky Beach, and was spine-tinglingly cold. It was choppy, and every splash made us squeal - but it was very refreshing!
A toilet stop turned into a service centre lunch on the way out of Port Macquarie - I've never seen a petrol station so crowded! Then we were back on the road, crossing more "mighty rivers" as we drove to Forster-Toncurry. This was a lovely spot, full of tourist holiday makers - the calm estuary on one side of the point contrasting with the ocean waves in the other. We all had ice creams, and Matthew stripped off and jumped in the ocean pool as he couldn't remember ever having seen a ocean pool before.
We then took a very pretty drive, through the Great Lakes area. We went along
the peninsular to Tiona, where the lake and the ocean could be seen on either side of the car, to the picturesque Elizabeth Beach with its sleepy jetty onto Wallis Lake, and then around Myall Lake. Plenty of good fishing spots here!
We rejoined the highway and made our way it no Charlestown, Newcastle, where we had a room at the Mercure. All fine - 5 of us in a very large room with a QS bed and 3 singles. We had dinner at a German bier house which was good, and all fell tired but happy into bed
