It was a bit overcast when we got going today, but we can’t complain because we have been enjoying fabulous weather until now.
We decided last night, after maneuvering the truck into the car park, that we would have to explore on foot today because of it being such a tight fit. It occurred to both of us, after it was unloaded, that it might be riding a bit higher without the load in the back which could make it an even tighter fit under the height barrier?? Taking it out again tomorrow will be stressful enough without trying to take it out and back in today!!
We headed out along Terrigal Drive and spotted a couple of kookaburras on top of a light pole, then a couple more on the next light pole. On the next light pole there was a lone kookaburra being harassed by three horrible minah birds. Fortunately, two of the other kookaburras came to its rescue. Three minahs decided they were no match for three kookaburras and we were able to take a photo of the three kookaburras together. In all there were six in a short section along Terrigal Drive. Presumably all in
the same family group because they are fiercely territorial?
From the end of Terrigal Drive we walked alongside Terrigal Beach and around to the Boat Ramp before climbing up to Terrigal Point and around past Kurrawyba. Next we climbed the steep hill up to The Skillion before walking back past the boat ramp and around to the Terrigal Boardwalk. We could walk onto the boardwalk from this end, but couldn’t access it from the Terrigal Beach end. It is currently partially closed for repairs following damage caused by a cliff fall in March.
We looked for sandwiches or rolls for lunch, but couldn’t find any light options. We ended up having noodles and dumplings at Sea Bay restaurant for lunch and then popped into the Spar for some supplies only to discover that they had a sandwich bar in there!! Then we walked past the Terrigal Surf Café at the life saving club where we could have had BLATs on Turkish bread rolls. Damn it, we obviously didn’t look hard enough did we?
We walked back to the motel where we had a very lazy afternoon. Bernie had read in the motel’s compedium (sic) that their pool
is heated to 28°C which sounded pretty good. If the sun had been shining we might have taken a dip, but with it being rather depressingly overcast we just vegged out in our room.
We heard on the news tonight that a whale was spotted with her new calf off Terrigal today. WHAT? Not again! When we were in Sawtell we heard on the news that a whale gave birth off Coffs Harbour while we were there, but we missed it. Now it’s happened again and we haven’t been in exactly the right place at exactly the right time just sort of … nearby. Although we then heard that today’s sighting was by a drone operator with his drone so mum and calf probably weren’t visible with the naked eye from the shore?
We had dinner at the Terrigal Hotel tonight because the tip from the owner was that most of the restaurants in town are closed on a Monday night.
