Well first of all, Happy New Years and and hope you all had a great time off over christmas....for us it continues! By now you should all have dug your way out from under the mountains of wrapping paper and recovered from the New Years hangovers....and be working towards those healthy resolutions!!
When we last wrote we were enjoying our last few days in the Blue Mountains before heading back to Sydney for Christmas and New Years...and our own 'apartment' for a week! After finding our way back into Sydney and to Greenwich on the north shore we were greeted by an eccentric and over zealous owner of a converted garage - "our apartment"! It turned out to be very cosy with the fridge beside the bed and the bathroom in the kitchen, but it was still nice to have our own space for a week.
We settled in and decided that considering the kitchen we were in for a tough time of cooking while we were there so spent half of Christmas eve searching for a restaurant that would be open on the big day and made the executive decision of booking an Indian restaurant for a Christmas
day curry instead!
So Christmas morning rolled around and we woke up and enjoyed a festive breakfast of 'coco pops' (always a favourite any time of the year!), got ready and headed off to Manly for the day where we chilled out in the sunshine and picnic'd on the beach! We didnt however get into the sea as it was very chilly and had tons of bluebottles washed up on the beach during the afternoon too (small very stingy jellyfish!) We had a lovely time and saw a stingray from the wharf too! Then home it was to get all festive for the traditional curry....well it must be traditional somewhere - and very good it was too!!
Since christmas we have just spent time exploring more of Sydney and treated ourselves to a meal at the top of the Sky Tower in the 300m up revolving restaurant! The fact that it was a buffet (all you can eat no less!) was purely coincidence and in true cheap backpacker style we made sure we got our money's worth, and the money's worth of some others too!! We both tucked into three huge plate fulls of everything from roast beef
to seafood, curry to stir-fry and everything inbetween...and mostly on the same plate!! Yummm! This was, of course, followed by a healthy selection of cakes (approximately nine different types!), EACH! Still recovering the following day!
Having moved on from 'the garage' we moved back into central Sydney for New Years. We knew that to get a good position on the harbour to see the famous fireworks we would have to get there early, so armed with a picnic and supplies an army batallion would have been proud of we set up camp at 2 in the afternoon with it already packed tight! We managed to get into some shade as it was about 30 degrees and made ourselves comfy for the 10 hour wait!
...........................................................10 hours later...................................and all of our supplies depleated it was time for the main event! The countdown begun and the fireworks lit up the sky with about 3 separate displays around the harbour all co-ordinated and some being launched from the city towerblocks too! The ones from the bridge were the most impressive and it was a great way to see in the New Year!
So, Happy New Year to you all!!
As you know we had been looking for work and so far have had no luck so we are about to head up the coast to Brisbane for a few days there and then on to a smaller town in Queensland called Bunderberg where we hope to find work for the next couple of months! We'll keep you posted on how we get on, but it doesnt promise to be the most exciting of times! However, these two months will be the only work we do for a year so cant complain! And for those that dont know, we have also added Ecuador to the list and have booked internal flights for when we are in South America, so looking forward to that now too!
Well, we had better head off but hope you are all keeping well and looking forward to the year ahead!
Hope to hear from you and we will blog again soon!
