We arrived in Sydney around lunch time on the saturday (7th) and after getting some info of what was going on in the city we tried find uot how to get to Gorden the suburb in which the family who had so kindly offered us a place to stay lived! The trains weren't running on the north shore line so we had to swap to a bus but it all made sense eventually and we made it to gorden where we had a friendly welcome from Johnson family (sue, mark,2kids, 3 terriers, 1 great dane, 2 ferrets, 1 mouse and 2 horses, all friendly and welcoming maybe bar the ferrets who loved to bite your ankles!!!)
Our first day in sydney was a soggy one but we had a wonder around the city and took in what was there and what we wanted to see etc. It was the Queens birthday that weekend so it was a long one, on the monday we took a trip to Sydney Aquarium which was pretty good. in some of the tankswe could say we'd seen most of the fish i them when we were snorkelling in Indonesia! that was cool! After that
aquarium
never turn your back on an empty tank!!!! we went out ito Darling harbour to listen to the Jazz festival that was going on around the place! there were several different stages with different performers. We sat and watched one set and the percussionist used about 10 different instruments in one song which was impresive!! On our walk from th station to the house we saw hundreds of fruit bats making their nightly flight over the woods which was good!
The next day Sue kindly gave us a lift to just near Spit bridge so we could do th coastal walk round to Manly! It was a good walk with some good views, Manly itself was pleasant and we sat on the water front munching on chocolate muffins uummmmm!! We aought the Ferry back to Circular Quay and timed it about right! we saw the beginnings of sunset as we left Manly harbour and by the time we were coming into sydney harbour al the lights were starting to come on in the city, the bridge and the Opera house were lite up as wel making it all look pretty impressive!
We decided to treat ourselves to a night at the oprea house while we were
in the city so we made a night of it and had a meal with the view of the Opera house all lite up (for a good price too considering the location!) then went and watched a performance of Edward Scissorhands. I dont think it was quite what either if us had expected but it was very good and we both enjoyed it!
Since we were in sydney we figured we should g and see Bondi beach, the day we went however was't warm and sunny but windy and rainy so it was just a big beach really but we decided to go for a walk along the coast from bondi to south head which was lovely. There had been sitings of a whale from bondi a couple of days previous so we kept looking but the weather mant that vissability was poor so we didnt see any :-(
We met up with Luke an old friend of helly's that is living in Sydney at the moment for dinner that evening, it was really good to catch up with hinm and a shame we didnt get the chance to meetup again before we were on our way again.
Our last big thing we did around Sydney was to go to the blue mountains! We set off about 6.30 i the morning and arrived there around 9ish. We had a good walk out to the Three sisters then down the giants staircase into the wide canyon bottom. As we walked along the bottom we saw a paradise type bird doing a dance and making some amazing noises that you really wouldn't expect a bird to make!!! then it was back up via the furber step!!(how much furber!!!) they were quite steep! but gave some good views of the waterfallsand over into valley!
Staying with the family enabled us to relaxe a bit and we had a cuple of days doing just that, relaxing and reading and aking it easy. We were also able to do a bit of cooking and had the rare treat of home made pizza.
On our last night we went out to see Kieron (youngest kid) playing in his school band and 3 other school bands before settling down to our last diner with the family as we would be leaving nice and early the following morning. we ended up catching the 6am train into the city for our bus that left not ong ofter 7am!!
