Uluru at sunset
absolutely amazing Well well , lets see.. i think i last left you when we were in Perth as we were waiting for some of eves friends to come back from holiday so we could go and stay with them for the weekend, which we did and i have to say the aussies have it good the suburbs are huge for every city but the houses are all massive and really damn nice so we stayed with Sam and Gary for the weekend and they gave us a lift to the train as we booked on a 3 day trip to the red centre which started off as a 3 day train ride (the longest straight railway in the world apparently) on the Indian pacific then one nite in adelaide and a further 2 nites on the Ghan up to alice springs.. the train rides were pretty good, well better than the trans pennine trains back home anyway.. but the main thing that strikes you as you travel across the australia is just how damn big the place is.. its huge !! i think its something you need to experience to fully appreciate (flying above being a cop out) about an hour or
thorney devil
we nearly ran this guy over while he was trotting across the road so after departing Perth the houses fall away and the trees start getting smaller turning into knee high bushes and then thats it for afew thousand miles.. apart from a fre lil mining towns. (see the pics)
so after the five or so days on the train we got to our hostel and collapsed into our dorm beds with a good deal of relief.. as we were up the next day and dossed about alise springs for a day in readyness for the 5 o-clock start the day after, for too soon 5 o-clock came around and blurry eyed we all tromped onto the bus where i promptly remembered id forgotten my camera.. as you can see we went back and got it but for a few moments we felt abit sick.. anyway we managed to get off again for a few hours drive to what we all came to see.. the big red rock ! we got to our camp site for about 4 ish dumped our stuff and set off to catch the sunset at Uluru.. driving there with everyones necks craining. We got there and popped open a few bottles of champers and settled down to watch
the show.. and a show it was, Uluru is alot like you imagine and also very different.. as it is seeing something on a post card and standing next to something usualy is.. the rock is massive and made to like much bigger because there pretty much nothing else around above waist height apart from the occasional tree.
The rock starts off a light yellow sandy colour and slowly changes to a bright orange and continues to change as the sun sets to a deep orange, red, deep rusty red, and then into purply colours as the light fades out of the day.. once you sit back and start to take in the view you forget the crowds are there and get lost watching the amazing colour changes at one of the wonders of the world.
When the sun sank we all packed up and headed back to the camp site as we had another early start the next day, up again at 4 in the morning and we once again drove back to the rock where people decided to either do the base walk or the climb and we were about half and half.. me and eve being
on the base walk group.. the reason we set off so early is because of the heat at about 10am it atarts to heat up and doesn't stop untill about 5-6 o-clock but anyway we did the walk which was really nice (and flat) it took afew hours to do and was really starting to heat up by the time we finished.. the next day we did a trek to kings canyon.. not that much to say about it really, it was cool but it was quite abit harder than the base walk. that night we slept out under the stars.. really cool experience you sleep in something called a swag, its like a sort of a thick leather sleeping bag outer with a small mattress in it.. really comfy and really warm, but the main attraction being the sky as its about as far as you can get in oz from any light pollution and the stars are fantastic you can see about a million more than at any other place.. it was truly amazing just lying there listening the dingoes and watching the shooting stars zooming by..
Once we finished with the tour we had arranged to
fly to Sydney (about half the price than overground and ALOT quicker).. so we arrived in the capital found a place to stay and slept.. the next day we hit the sights which you can see on the pics, weve only been here for a couple of days and dont know what we're doing yet but as ive said before once ive done it il let you know = )
