Edit Blog Post
So it has been a good couple of months since you have seen a blog from us. Happy new year to anyone we haven't had contact with. We are in Sydney and have been since we left Fiji. Yes, Australian customs saw it fit to let us through despite looking like Mr and Mrs Swampy and having a good hard look at our deer antler. We spent 3 weeks at big brothers which was very generous of Darren and Natalie. During that time we did a tiny bit of sight seeing and loads of flat hunting and job hunting. Basically, we had decided by then to work in Sydney for 3-6 months and save some money for further travels. Trying to find a place to live proved frustrating. Every room we went to view seemed to have 20 other people viewing it, particularly the ones that were in nice areas. It’s a bit like a personality exam when you go round to them as your prospective flat mates try and get to know you in 5 minutes. I remember one in particular that we missed out on …… 3 young guys in a cool town-house in a great location rejected us
The Opera House
We went in there recently to see a show by the Lost and Found Orchestra (Stomp2) It was great! Not as big inside as you would have thought but the sound is impressive. in favour of 2 Swedish girls! I mean, I really don't see what they were thinking, I thought we got on like a house ;-)
Anyway, to cut a long and boring one, we managed to get ourselves jobs in the City and a place to live by Christmas. It was perfect timing as it meant that we could relax over xmas and enjoy it to the max. Darren cooked up a quality bird and we had the usual traditional xmas of eating, drinking and games - it was great. A firm reminder of where we were (if the view wasn't enough! - see pics) was eating the dinner outside in lovely temperatures whilst the local families took part in their Christmas tradition nearby - Cricket. Yes, Ozzies love a game of cricket on xmas day. While we are on the subject ….. I can't believe that we got to Australia just in time for the ashes and our team of bumbling idiots may as well have not shown up. I am going to start watching the AFL ozzie rules when it starts next month, I am a neutral, it will be less stressful ;-)
Our room is
Arriving in Sydney
Sydney has random freak days that are 10 degrees hotter than normal. The day we arrived was one of them, touching 40! Walking with our backpacks nearly killed us! in a lovely little town-house in a leafy suburb called Glebe, just 15mins bus away from our work in the city center. Its actually a house-sit as the normal tenants have gone away for a few months. That was a real bonus as we have use of all of their stuff. After accepting the room, we went round there for a chat and found out that the guy who's room we were moving into had just finished a stint in England's 2nd favourite Ozzie soap - Home and Away!! (Home and Away spoiler coming up, look away if you don’t want to know) No surprise that he has gone away for a while as his character has just stabbed one of its favourite characters Sally! We are keeping an eye out for hate mail.
NYE has to be the highlight of our stay so far. We managed to get a great spot to see the fireworks. We were right on the harbour opposite the opera house. They really go to town with them and it was surreal being there having seen clips of it on TV so many times. After the fireworks we went on a boat party in
the harbour so it really was a night to remember (or not as the case maybe for patches of it!).
Something we have noticed, since living in a foreign country for the first time ever, is how good our media is at home! TV, radio and especially newspapers …… they are appalling here, completely dia. Thank god they have good weather and beaches!
We have slipped into life here pretty easily. We have had a lot of help from some lovely people - thank you! Sydney is great, no doubt about it. The beaches are never more than 20mins away and they are beautiful. We find the cost of living to be cheap, enabling us to save money whilst enjoying ourselves. Don’t worry though, we will be moving on again in 6 months time to see the rest of oz and then onto Asia which we are really excited about. Besides, we are not sure that we could live here for more than 6 months without starting to vandalise traffic lights! There are millions of them! If you are in a car, you spend 70% of your journey waiting at them, and if you are a pedestrian, you
"you know we belong together!"
Come on, I know you all know the words! Recognise this lovely beach walkway (that leads up to the surf club)? We had to visit Palm beach as its a very nice beach .... and its also where home and away is filmed ;-) spend 70% of your time waiting at them! (also, when you do get to cross, they make the most annoying noise that will haunt us forever).
The 'olds' are over this week .... taking advantage of their sons actually being in the same place at the same time!
Hope everyone is well.
