This time the party I had the pleasure to attend was somewhat special. Even though it was only the second best choice it was highly entertaining. I say second choice, because I wanted to go on a free breakcore beach party with a most massive line-up but it was postponed because of the weather.
On Saturday evening I went to Mari and Sara's place in Newtown/Sydney and only then it was announced that the beach party was postponed. Luckily they knew another party for the night with a dubstep/D'n'B line-up so we went there instead. I had no idea what it was going to be and the funny thing was that I had the feeling that somehow I knew that block we entered. And that was no deja-vu event, because after climbing some stairs I found that the actual party is in the flat I went to after my last dubstep party on Oxford St. about two months ago after the Earthdance festival. So I knew some of the performers and the guys that actually live in that apartment.
The whole block was crowded and it is a maze. No, not just because I'm generally
Boot
at greenbeats unable to orient myself. It really is a labyrinth. I seriously didn't get the structure of that building and why it had all these staircases going in weird angles and in different directions on different levels... It is the perfect party building. It is really hard to gauge how many guest have been there, as they were all scattered in the corridors, on different levels, on the roof and terraces and on the dance floor. I myself spent a lot of time anywhere but in the apartment where the actual party was going on but instead was socializing anywhere else with countless people I did or didn't meet before.
But of course moving my feet was the primary target and didn't want to be missed. This was accomplished by the live-set of Boot&Sook, who managed a perfect transition from bassheavy dubstep to breaky drum'n'bass while being backed by MCs and singing voices. Decent show! Nobody was standing still and it was crowded and hot in front of the speakers. Everything after that act was worse and not as rich in ideas. About four o'clock the party found an end because the organizers didn't want the cops to shut it down
greenbeats
before we all left in protest (as that happens regularly with this block). Maybe the music was not as incredibly awesome as the other night with Mark N but the atmosphere, the people and the location were amazing, making this party special in its ways.
23 hours afterparty
From there I went with Mari and Boot to someone's place, who is not there at the moment but people are playing records there and keep the place alive. There I met Tim. One of the funniest characters I came to know in this city, which is full of funny characters. The way he tells stories is so typically Australian but direct and real and humorous. We went with him to his house after a while and took the wrong way, walking for quite some kms even though his place was practically around the corner. As we came back Sara had arrived as well and the four of us kept laughing our heads off in the backyard of the house. At noon we went to a place in Sydenham and I assume that again we didn't quite take the shortest way, since it took ages to get there. The place is actually quite seedy but they
had some music and drinks. The party was called green beats and is an afternoon BBQ sitting around and drinking kind of thing that happens once every month or so. After a couple of hours one of the securities turned aggressive and wanted to pick up some trouble just to prove himself and his ego that he is an authority. I don't really know what you need securities for, if they're the only ones making trouble... but I could ask that question with the police sometimes as well. In the first place he was having a go at Mari but in the end he was throwing out Boot, who stood up for her and told him that he is incapable of doing his job right. To me that was an accurate analysis of the situation and I might have put it as nicely if my English had been sufficient. After that about a dozen of us left the place to show that their policy was wrong. From there we went to somebody else's place I didn't know and later that evening we were invited for dinner at the house of some Spanish guys, who were very hospitable. All the time
we were joking and laughing and the feeling was like being back in Lisbon, thrown into a circle of trust. I enjoyed that time so much. At about one o'clock we went back to Newtown, a part of town that was still busy, and after another two hours of general craziness we went to sleep for a couple of hours. The next day we tried to recapitulate what had happened the last two days... it was a lot.
In the early afternoon I went back to the sleepy town further south where I came from a decade ago... after all I had capoeira practice later that day and I didn't want to miss that, did I?
I didn't make too many photos that weekend but quite some videos. The problem is that I still didn't manage to upload them. I even tried Google Videos without success - must be a problem with the codecs my camera uses and I'm not geek enough to solve it. I keep trying to find a way to make them accessible to you and I'll tell you if I found one.
