Camping out on NYE
Myself, Brian (Canadian) and Jeannette (German) hanging out waiting for the Fireworks Hi Gang!
I know I should have updated my blog ages ago but better late then not at all! So I really haven't been up to very much lately except for changing my mind about 500 times a day with what I am doing and where I am heading in Oz. I am really glad I am traveling by myself because I am sure someone would have killed me by now because I can’t commit…….hmmmm Janine non-committal….who would have thought?!
I bought a car, a Hyundai Excel. I am so looking forward to having my own wheels. I really miss driving and then I will have that much more freedom. It is a manual, so I will have to get used to shifting with my left hand. If I can drive in England I am sure Oz won't be a problem.
I’ll be leaving Sydney on Saturday to go to the Blue Mountains, from there making my way down to Melbourne and then into Tasmania. A girl from my hostel Anne was going to come with me but she is now going to Fiji. That’s the thing with traveling; plans can change in a heartbeat. It’s really refreshing
My German "Boy" Friends
Taken New Year's Eve. They have all left to go to Melbourne. Hopefully I will meet up with them again. living day to day with no set plan, just leaving yourself open to all possibilities, I love it. I put a notice in the hostel to see if anyone was interested in joining me and I think an American girl will come with me. I may not have to do it alone, but if I do, that is ok as well. Just me, Red Ass, the open road, good tunes….it will be good.
I plan on being in Tasmania for the first week in February. I want to do some Wwoofing there. Wwoofing is where you go stay with a family and help them out. It varies from family to family but it is mostly working on farms, animal farms, and orchards. You don't get paid for this but you get your accommodation for free and your meals. So it will help me save a bit of money and really experience Oz life or rather Tassie life. I am really looking forward to doing this - some hands on stuff! I am also going to get my RSA Certificate in Melbourne. This will allow me to serve Alcohol in Australia. Then I can get a job in a pub,
Fireworks
I have some video footage of the works which is better. bar or a restaurant, another great way to meet some Aussies.
In between Christmas and New Year's Eve I didn't get up to very much. I went on a Jet Boat Cruise around the Harbour, went to the Sydney Aquarium, Museum, lots of walking around Sydney, of course shopping and hanging out with everyone. The weather here hasn’t been very nice, until the last couple of days so haven’t been to the beaches, except for one day at Palm Beach, north of Sydney.
I have to say I wasn't overly impressed with the Aquarium to be honest. They have some cool fish in there but the enclosures are so small and the crocodile looked dead. I guess I have been spoiled diving the Great Barrier Reef and Julian's Rocks in Byron Bay to see really cool oceanic life. This kind of turned me off going to the Zoo here in Sydney and well like I stated in another blog I am not a big fan to begin with. I have been to the Australia Zoo which was amazing.
I spent New Year's Eve at Blue's Point in North Sydney. A group of us had camped out from
The Canadian Girls
Carey was the girl that won the Backpackers Idol. Noon that day. In order to get a good spot you have to go super early as they cram about 5,000 people into a very small area. We packed food, drinks, cards, mp3 players, books, blankets. They have fireworks at 9:00 pm for the kids and then the big show is at midnight, right after the countdown. I have never seen such amazing fireworks before. It was crazy! Makes the Stampede's fireworks look like firecrackers! It went on for about 15 minutes, non-stop. There were fireworks going off everywhere. Some directly in front of us, some off the bridge, some to our left, some to our right and some from the tops of the skyscrapers downtown. I have never seen anything like it! It was totally worth the 12 hour camp out. It wasn't very warm that day but I would rather it be a bit cooler then +40 which it apparently was last year. It took almost 2 hours to get home after the works just with everyone trying to get on the train so by the time I got there; there was no point in heading out again.
On Monday night our hostel went to an Irish
Jade and Myself
Jade is a girl I met from Scotland and have been hanging out with in Sydney. Pub (someone did asked me if I was Irish AGAIN!!!) for Backpackers Idol. One of the girls working reception at the hostel I am staying at, Carey (from Nanaimo, B.C.) was a contestant. She plays guitar and sings and was really good. She won it that night so at the end of the month she moves onto finals where she can win a trip for 2 up or down the East Coast. Hearing her play made me miss my guitar. It's funny how when you are at home you take loads of things for granted. I sure really appreciate and am very thankful for the things I have and opportunities that are available to me. I guess that is what removing yourself from everything is all about. You begin to realize what things are really important to you and what is not.
So it is my last couple of days in Sydney. Today I am going to Manly Beach with my friend Jeannette and a girl from Italy. My other friend Nadine will meet us there later and we are all going out for drinks tonight. Then tomorrow I will hit up Coogee Beach and later that night I
Fountain
Sydney has some really cool different looking fountains around Darling Harbour am doing the Harbour Bridge climb. I am doing a sunset climb, which will be really cool. They tell me the Bridge Climb takes about 3 ½ hours to complete. I am really looking forward to it.
Once I get on the road again and doing some exciting things I will be better on the updates. Sorry everyone for being such a slacker the past couple of weeks.
Oh last night I went out and I had two people ask me if I am Irish again. Even an Irish guy asked me if I was Irish HAHA!
