On a dream beach

Weekend in Palm Beach

Esther and I had decided to take a weekend break to Palm beach made famous as Summer Bay in Home and Away. Given my last trip in the Mini I really wanted something convertible and a little special. I got it in the TT….. what a dream machine!!! We had it for the weekend although Friday night it lay dormant in the bear cave. Up early Saturday morning we headed over the bridge to the northern beaches - first stop Fresh water beach ,a couple up from Manly, for breakfast. Freshwater is a really nice beach but it doesn’t really have the café ambience that we are used to in the Eastern beaches still very nice to see yet another Sydney beach. Just taking the day as it came we drove all the way up to Palm Beach and explored round the hills before unwittingly descending into Whale Beach which could be famous in its own right. After a couple of hours we found our way to a very quaint ‘Spanish style’ B&B up in the hills. Having a quick aperitif on our terrace we enjoyed a leisurely walk down the hill for a really nice meal

in town.

Getting up early on Sunday we took the advice of our host Randy and did the walk up to the light house where you get great views of Palm beach and Pittwater. For Sunday we had no set plan but driving back we decided to pop into Avalon check it out and have lunch. With the map spread over our table the world was our Pittwater Oyster. A few places looked nice so we decided to head for places and see how long it would take us. Thus far on the weekend I’d been getting a bit frustrated with the roads as the TT is not meant to be driven in traffic but the open road. Heading into the Ku-Ring-Gai Nation park I found empty twisting roads which were almost made for a 4 wheel drive coupe!!! Sometimes lack of research in a trip can really work in your favour as we initially intended to head to Cottage Point but a sign to a marina gave an impulse to turn right where we found a Park Guard wishing to charge us 15bucks to enter this section of the park. Seeing we were in a 90k aud car we could really say no and enter we did. Akuna Bay was the next stop on the road where we found a beautiful marina and a live jazz band playing. It was such a beautiful setting that I felt we could have been by an Italian Lake while eating our ice cremes. From there it looked a drive to a view point to called west head but I assured Esther that we’d make it half whatever the suggested time would be:-) So at 3 pm we reached west head and found ourselves the othersider of Pittwater directly opposite the light house we had just been at in the morning. The view was even better hear and we able to hunt out some Aboriginal caves in the bush. From there we dashed back to Cottage Point which also has a nice marina and fantastic restaurant. All in the day we spent Ku-Ring-Gai Nation Park has been one of my favourites so far in Sydney. Granted I had an amazing car but to have such a beautiful park only half an hour away from the city actually quite shocked me and I’m looking forward to seeing what other parks are about!!!!!

Latter that evening we stopped off at Dee Why beach as the last people were leaving the beach at dust we took in the sun set and had one more fantastic meal….. What a weekend!!!!
